18 John Cale - I Keep A Close Watch

Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music
ĐR̃äⒻṬëŕṽöï dïgïtïzëd 2014 (and finished it July 4, 2026)

This version combines two lossy tracks (the first two songs, "Caribbean Sunset" and "Guts") with a flac file digitized from a cassette tape recorded by Hans Devente.  His copy cuts in to "Guts" about halfway through the song.  There's a version of this on Archive.org that has the first two songs but is missing the last two songs ("Fear Is A Man's Best Friend" and "I Keep A Close Watch.")

I'm wary of combining different sources, but the sources blended together well-enough that I think this is an improvement over the two incomplete recordings.  Yes, the first two songs are from a lossy source, but they sound fine.

"being paid just enough to make them wanna KILL for you, but not enough to make them wanna DIE for you,"
~Mercenaries

I know it's probably hard for a John Cale fan that may not know this record to accept the guy dropping his acoustical piano and violin for an electric guitar, and issuing what's most probably the most brutal/ straightforward live album ever- but it would be a crime to ignore this masterpiece, which runs at full voltage all the way down. Captain Hook is probably the best Cale performance ever, Mercenaries the best anti-war song ever written, but anyway the whole album is an astonishing experience, provided of course that you do know how to pump up the volume for your speakers.

Track List:
01 - Mercenaries (Ready For War)
02 - Baby You Know
03 - Evidence
04 - Dr. Mudd
05 - Walkin' the Dog
06 - Captain Hook
07 - Only Time Will Tell
08 - Sabotage
09 - Chorale

Marc Aaron: Guitar
Joe Bidwell: Keyboards, Vocals
Doug Bowne: Drums, Vocals

A musician of rare versatility, John Cale is an uncompromising artist who has spent the past 40 years working as a composer, performer and producer. Born in Wales, he studied musicology in London before winning a scholarship to study in Boston. He went on to co-found The Velvet Underground before embarking on a solo career. Tonight Cale performs songs from his latest album Hobo Sapiens together with earlier solo material, music from his time with the Velvets and a song by the great Leonard Cohen.

The Velvet Underground - Live Columbus, OH. 1966

The Velvet Underground - Valley Dale Ballroom
November 4, 1966

Columbus, OH.
@320

The Velvet Underground's performance at the Valleydalle Ballroom, Columbus, Ohio, on 4 November 1966, taped by art students in the audience with the help of the band's equipment manager. Excellent show to a largely indifferent and cloth-eared audience. The sound is very good on the whole, given the age of the recording. There are a few different versions of this one circulating, and judging by the track times, this one appears to be the fullest available. And it doesn't have the barking dog...(more at bootleg zone)

4- The Black Angel's Death Song
5- All Tomorrows Parties

John Cale - Comes Alive {Out of Print and Back from the Dead}

Originally posted by Jobe April 20, 2013...New link posted on March 10, 2014
and now the Lazurus effect in force again...

With his record company fast losing interest in his career, John Cale was at a crossroad. Should he just keep putting out the same record over and over? Or say fuck it and go for broke. Fortunately for us he choose the latter. Leaving nothing to chance he comprised a set list of semi-hits and fan favorites. John even pulled out a talk-box for the seventeen minute finale. Well you know the rest. This album went on to become the biggest selling live album ever until The Eagles Live In The Hotel California which was replaced by Led Zeppelin's All Our Songs Sound The Same. Why this album went out of print is beyond me. "Huh?" Excuse me ladies and gentlemen my publisher would like to say a few words here."Go ahead it's all yours" We are very sorry. Jobe has none of the facts right on this record. Jobe constantly just makes shit up. And for him to try and use skewed facts and try to tie this record in with "Frampton Comes Alive" makes us bow our head in shame. But since he worked for the Feds and has been furloughed from his job we have to keep him around. Oh by the way this is at 320. See scans.

(Live Recording at The Lyceum London Feb. 26th, 1984. Tracks A1 & B5 are studio tracks.)

Velvet Underground - Retinal Circus (Fake) 1968

Velvet Underground - Live Retinal Circus 1969
Soundboard @320

*Original Notes*
The Retinal Circus was a venue in Vancouver, B.C. that hosted concerts by the likes of Cream,The Byrds, et al. The Velvet Underground played there several times and were well liked there. The last time they played there would have been at the end of their '69 tour. That said, there is speculation that this recording comes from The Eagle Theater in Seattle. The Eagle had its own in-house recording system and recorded most shows there for potential radio broadcasts. The Velvets would have shared the bill with one or two other big acts, and played for a larger audience than usual. Most of the original Eagle Theater reels were bought by a collector in the mid 1970's and have only begun to circulate in recent years.
The source for this is a Maxell XL II cassette made from a large 15ips reel. The cassette is at least 15 years old but has held up pretty well. It is not known if this show was ever broadcast.
