We've got the script, even though this is the hosted version and is therefore superfluous.  Somewhere there's an unhosted version that needs this script!

I tossed in the ads from the Los Angeles Times, and an LA Weekly interview from a month before the show, and a concert review that didn't think much of the show, but did credit Mr. Dio as a "charged up screamer with lungs forceful enough to blow out a forest fire."

Coco Montoya - Live Jazzbones 2008

Back From The Dead...Again
Originally posted January 30, 2009 and February 24, 2016

Coco Montoya - Live Jazzbones
April 8, 2008
Tacoma, WA.
Soundboard @192

Though he grew up as a drummer and was raised on rock & roll, Coco Montoya became an
outstanding blues guitarist in the '90s after stints in the bands of Albert Collins and John Mayall. Montoya debuted as a leader in 1995 with the Blind Pig album Gotta Mind to Travel and garnered an award for Best New Blues Artist at the following year's Handy Awards ceremonies.
His first album with the Bluesbreakers came in 1985. Mayall had not released an album in five years at that point and the Bluesbreakers had been dead for more than 15, but the live album Behind the Iron Curtain proved Mayall's viability thanks mostly to the fiery work of Montoya. The guitarist appeared on three studio albums with Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, but then struck out on his own by the mid-'90s. Signed to Blind Pig, Montoya released Gotta Mind to Travel in 1995 with help from Mayall and another former Bluesbreaker compatriot, rhythm guitarist Debbie Davies. After years of toil under Collins and Mayall, Montoya was finally in the spotlight and his award as Best New Blues Artist of 1996 proved quite ironic, given his years of experience. His second album, Ya Think I'd Know Better, was followed by 1997's Just Let Go. At that point, Montoya and Blind Pig parted company and he signed with Alligator Records.

Production of D.I.R. Broadcasting for the ABC Radio Network
Executive Producers: Bob Meyrowitz and Peter Kauff
Produced by Bob Kominsky
Host: Tony Pigg

There was some issue with the first pressing of this show sent to the radio stations. A corrected version of sides B and C was sent out, as those sides were deemed unsuitable for airing by the ABC network. We do not know the reason for the replacement.  It may have been a censorship issue, or something wrong with the pressing.

I've seen two copies of this as a 5 LP set, including the "unsuitable" disc.  This is just from a 3 LP set.  You know how I am, I will make it my life's work to track down that 5-LP version and reveal its horrible secrets to the world.

The Mello Yello series took place in 1981, with three shows in May on three consecutive nights...but targeted to different audience segments.   A combined Christopher Cross/Leo Sayer show was on May 1, Rod Stewart on May 2, and Anne Murray on May 3.  Each of them reached a slightly different segment of the pop-rock marketplace.

The shows were very successful.  Billboard magazine reported, "The May 2 Rod Stewart special, according to an ABC spokesman, had the highest ratings of any national FM radio broadcast since the rebirth of national radio programming in the late 1960s" with approximately nine million listeners.  Later that summer, "Advertising Age gave its Most Creative Use Of Radio award to McDonald & Little for it's Saturday radio rock concert series."

The shows were so successful that they followed up with three consecutive nights in October with the Jefferson Starship, Moody Blues, and Charlie Daniels.

While Mello Yello was the sponsor of other shows in future years, the shows do not appear to be part of this series.

List of 1981 shows:
Mello Yello Presents Rocks Best Starring Christopher Cross and Leo Sayer air date 05/1/81
Mello Yello Presents Rod Stewart air date of 5/2/81
Mello Yello Presents Country Comfort, An Evening With Anne Murray 5/3/81

Mello Yello Presents Jefferson Starship broadcast date of 10/9/81
Mello Yello Presents the Moody Blues air date 10/10/81
Mello Yello Presents Charlie Daniels air date 10/11/81

Digitized Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï 2026 version.

Includes 300 dpi scans of all six disc labels, the cue sheet, plus some press coverage...

There is a mystery over the source date for this show.  It is often attributed to January 18, 1987.  There was a broadcast on that date, supported by a press clipping from the Cleveland Plain Dealer of January 18, 1987 stating, "IN CONCERT, 10 P.M. (WMMS) Steve Winwood at Blossom Music Center."

So yes, WMMS-FM broadcast something on that date and time, and we have written published proof. I had originally found a story about Winwood's marriage and Grammy nominations from January, intending to write something about what a busy month it was for Winwood... which I'm leaving in the Artwork folder as proof that I'm an idiot, willing to believe things that make no sense. I thought, "Of course this was from January, the Internet told me so.  When has the Internet ever been wrong?"

Here's where I want to talk about how we... that is, all of us... often do not stop to THINK.

I've never been to Cleveland, but the Blossom Music Center is an OUTDOOR venue.  There's no roof.  No heating system.  We have similar outdoor venues in the San Francisco Bay Area: Shoreline in Mountain View, the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, the Concord Pavilion (or whatever they're calling it now...) in Concord.  ALL OF THESE RUN SHOWS FROM ROUGHLY LATE APRIL THROUGH OCTOBER, AT THE LATEST.

Because weather. Weather matters.

While we only have two seasons in the Bay Area ("Rainy season" and "Dry season"), Rainy season is a problem for outdoor concerts because NO ONE WANTS TO LISTEN TO MUSIC SOAKING WET, and musicians have a safety issue with that "death by stage electrocution" thing.

Which begs the question:  How the HECK do they pull off outdoor concerts, in Ohio, in January?

Are audiences just made of sterner stuff in the Midwest?  Yes, we San Franciscans are weedy weaklings compared to our brawny Midwestern brethren; I blame the palm trees. But are they that much tougher?

What was the weather in Cuyahoga Falls on January 18, 1987?

Well, the Cleveland Plain Dealer says, "TODAY: High 38 (3C), Lake-shore temperature 37, (3C). Low tonight 34 (1C). Normal high: 32. Normal low 18. Slick travel, with snow, sleet and freezing rain this morning, then cloudy this afternoon and tonight with rain, drizzle, and fog.  Lake temperature 35.
Tomorrow: Cloudy with rain that may change back to ice or snow.  High 36 and falling.  Low 26."

Okay... uh... does the January date seem reasonable now?  Were thousands of Steve Winwood fans really sitting in the rain, drizzle and fog in near freezing temperatures in January?  I flat-out don't believe that is true.

So I dug deeper... and found that Winwood played the Blossom Music Center on September 17, 1986. It's got to be from that date; the newspaper review of the show mentions that the first song ("...Low Spark..") was an abbreviated version, as on this show.

These tracks were released as SS 87-12 (air date Oct 18, 1987), which makes this release a bit odd, as it was slightly less than a month later. While Westwood One regularly repeated content, it was usually the following year, or at the least three or four months later.

Note the cue sheet says that Track 12 is "Freedom Rider," but it's "Freedom Overspill."  This error was also on the earlier cue for SS 87-12.

Anyway...that's what's on my mind this morning.  The Internet is wonderful, but keep in mind it makes us believe there were outdoor concerts in January in Cleveland, Ohio if we do not pause and stop and THINK.  Vincit omnia veritas!

This is a duplicate of the set, with no editing.  I extracted the wav files, compressed to flac, and named the files.  Other than that, I didn't normalize volume, this is a duplicate of the discs.  The tracks are chaptered by Westwood One.  I didn't move any of the editing points, or break out announcers from the music.  Everything is the way Westwood One created it. I've included 300 dpi scans of the discs and the cue sheet.  I took scans of the CD matrix numbers. As they can only be read from underneath, I provided mirrored images to make it easier to read.

===========

First of all, let's start with words of wisdom from Keith Richards.  Mr. Richards was 54 at the time.

"...we're late bloomers, I guess, we look at each other and (mumble) how long we been doin' this, how come this, it's getting easier, though, yeah yeah yeah, the joy of all this is really is playin' with the same guys, for all this and other time because there's nothing that can... to a musicians that can play together there's nothing like playing together for a long, long time, you get to know, you know, everybody's body here, just uh every little move every little body talk, you know and every little wink and look and you get more and more and you sort of know each other on another level, which is like the playing level, and dizz and eh it's a blessing, you know uh it's an extra in life to be able to go out with the same guys and keep honing it down and say come on yeah we're getting there, we're getting there boys y'know hey but everybody feels like they, we're still looking for the Stones, we're still looking for 'em."

This one is an unusual item.

First of all, the Rolling Stones played Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California on February 3, 1998. Westwood One broadcast the concert nationally by satellite.  National and local commercials were inserted into the live show. The ads were added by tape-delaying the concert. Hosts were Coe Lewis and John Leslie from San Diego's KGB-FM. I digitized my master copy of the live broadcast and it's in our archives at V-W, complete with commercials.

This is not from the live broadcast.  It's a 3-cd set of the broadcast without commercials.  The cd's have a custom design copied from the BRIDGES TO BABYLON album cover.  Lewis & Leslie's announcements are included, but no ads. There's a cue sheet, but no affidavit.  The cue sheet does not have a broadcast date, but has the concert date on it.  It's written as if it's part of a long title, "The Rolling Stones Concert Special  Live In San Diego  February 3, 1998."

Usually, the date on the Westwood One cue sheet is the date of the broadcast, not the date of the concert itself.  The CDs were not used for the original broadcast. There are no commercials on these CDs.

The songs are chaptered, not in big blocks of several songs run together as on Westwood One's Superstars In Concert shows.

The discs have "MADE IN THE USA BY METATEC CORPORATION" on the run-out.  Metatec is known to have manufactured discs for Westwood One.  If it didn't say Metatec, I would suspect this of being a bootleg.

We think this may have been issued as some sort of promotional item, or perhaps for non-comm (non-commercial) stations...although both explanations would be unusual for Westwood One.  We're not aware of other examples.

To add to the confusion, we saw a variation on Ebay using the same custom disc design, but WITH commercials.  The cue sheet says "THE ROLLING STONES LIVE IN SAN DIEGO Show #98-06 for broadcast the week of February 2, 1998." The cue sheets have commercials matching the ads on the live broadcast.

While I haven't examined this second version in person, it raises some questions.  A broadcast window starting on February 2nd for a show taking place on February 3rd is odd.  The show number of #98-06 was used for a John Mellencamp show aired the week of January 26, 1998.  The fonts on the affidavit look real to me.  Bootlegs and pirates would have no reason to include the commercials.  So it looks real, but the broadcast date isn't possible.

===========

Announcer John Leslie died on New Years Day January 2000 in the shower of his home.  His body was not discovered until January 11.  Death was attributed to alcohol abuse and poor nutrition.  "Friends say John had been drinking heavily since being fired from KGB last summer."  So...two years after hosting the Rolling Stones national live broadcast, he was dead.

Coe Lewis lasted on KGB until 2020.  She's on Facebook.

Brought to you by the crazy crew at the Collective For Live Music.

There's a review from the Evening Chronicle (Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England · Tuesday, October 28, 1980).

The newspaper reviews the concert from the prior day (October 27th).

I threw in some contemporaneous reviews of their Sound Effects album.

In 2015, a 6 CD boxed set "Fire and Skill" was issued, featuring six concerts, one from each year of the band's history.  The fourth disc included the entire Newcastle 1980-10-28 concert.  It promptly went out of print, with current prices on Discogs asking $185.00 to $400.00.  There was also a vinyl release in 2015 with the full concert, in a limited edition of 1,500 copies.

Of course you should go buy it!  It will sound much better than this digitization, there's lots more songs, and you won't have to listen to Pete Larkin.  On the other hand, if you're collecting all of the BBC College Concert shows, this will fill in a gap in your collection.

Here's a handy checklist for you!  Collect 'em all!

"being paid just enough to make them wanna KILL for you, but not enough to make them wanna DIE for you,"
~Mercenaries

I know it's probably hard for a John Cale fan that may not know this record to accept the guy dropping his acoustical piano and violin for an electric guitar, and issuing what's most probably the most brutal/ straightforward live album ever- but it would be a crime to ignore this masterpiece, which runs at full voltage all the way down. Captain Hook is probably the best Cale performance ever, Mercenaries the best anti-war song ever written, but anyway the whole album is an astonishing experience, provided of course that you do know how to pump up the volume for your speakers.

Track List:
01 - Mercenaries (Ready For War)
02 - Baby You Know
03 - Evidence
04 - Dr. Mudd
05 - Walkin' the Dog
