Roy Buchanan - Chicago, July 1985

Back From The Dead
Original post by Mitch

Killer guitar players at work, eh? Here's one on a guy who I think was a natural Jimi Hendrix--that is, he could do it without the toys. To help decipher some of Buchanan’s occult skill, I contacted Ellwood Brown, who produced Malaguena, and a man who knew personally knew Roy for years as a friend.

Here's a taste of the text from Rock 'n Blues Stew:

"Think for a moment about the anaconda snake of South America and the incredible crushing power it gets from its tremendous size. Now transfer the thought of that powerful grasp to human hand strength, and then wrap it around the neck of a 1953 yellow-blonde Telecaster, courtesy of the late Roy Buchanan. Nearly 300 pounds thick, Roy had the mass of an Amazon constrictor, too, but he could virtually squeeze atoms of electrical energy from an amplifier through his fingers.

"When I listen to Roy, I am overwhelmed at the prehistoric reptilian danger signals, supersonic siren alarms, incendiary explosions, tortured screams and shrieks, and cosmic laser blasts that he would rip from his guitar. He had an Alexandrian Library of sounds to draw upon: some moaned like an anguished, tormented soul in Hades, and others yowled and wailed like a cat in heat--ghastly, ghostly sounds, and probably reflected more of Roy’s darker brooding thoughts than he realized. Don’t forget: this is the man who said he wanted to marry a nun and, with those deep-set eyes ablaze with intensity, confided to Robbie Robertson he was part werewolf."

Roy Buchanan and the Snake Stretchers - The Crossroads, Bladensburg, MD, 1971

He could crush the strings with a grip so powerful that no one else dared play his guitar...because he set the action so high on the fretboard. One of his producers and friends told me so in...
Rock 'n' Blues Stew II.
