Spooky Tooth - Witness & You Broke My Heart...(2 fer)

Spooky Tooth - Witness
Studio Recordings - @320
Out of Print

$49 at the 'Zon

I had some friends that loved this recording. Me not so much, I liked the earlier recordings better. This one never to reach any high points and seemed to stay pretty much the same tempo though out. Some have said if it wasn't for Spooky Tooth there wouldn't haven been a Foreigner. That could be a good thing or a bad thing depending or your point of veiw.

Track List:

While I agree with the general consensus that 'Spooky two' is their best album, I've always found this and the follow up offering 'Witness', also released in 1973 equally as enjoyable.
After the 'Ceremony' debacle that arguably derailed the bands journey toward the upper echelons of rock stardom, this feisty comeback album, the first to feature future 'Foreigner' guitarist Mick Jones, sounds to my ears like the natural progression for the band to take.
From the crunching blues rock of opener 'Cotton growing man' to the spooky (no pun intended) 'Moriah', all eight tracks exhibit the bands trademark soulful charm.
The addition of Mick Jones injects some guitar urgency to driving rockers 'This time around', 'Wild fire' and 'Self seeking man'. But underpinning the whole thing for me is the Fabulous vocal ability of the late Mike Harrison; surely one of the most underrated rock singers of all.
For me, on a few of the tracks the song writing borders on average, hence the four stars, but Mike Harrison elevates them to a pleasant listening experience as only top vocalists can.

Luther Grosvenor ‎– Under Open Skies -1971

Luther James Grosvenor (born 23 December 1946, Evesham, Worcestershire, England) is an English rock musician, who played guitar in Spooky Tooth, briefly in Stealers Wheel and, under the pseudonym "Ariel Bender", in Mott the Hoople and Widowmaker.
~Wiki

Better known to Mott The Hoople and Widowmaker fans by the non de plume "Ariel Bender", Luther Grosvenor (who had used his "real name" during his earlier stint with Spooky Tooth) released this solo effort in the mid-70's. The album has a loose, "home studio" feel overall (although it should be noted that Edsel does a nice job with the remaster.) Guitar fans will likely find "Under Open Skies" more collectable than casual listeners as the fretwork is excellent. Grosvenor holds his own alongside contemporaries like Chris Spedding and Mick Ronson, who also excelled as sidemen but tended to deliver more workmanlike product as solo artists.

*Original Notes*
This is Spooky Tooth at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland OH from 1974. Probably an FM broadcast, but no specific info was provided in the info file I originally got with this. I got this from Pink Robert last year - many thanks to him for sharing his fabulous music collection with us. I checked various sites such as All Music Guide, Spooky Tooth discography sites, and Amazon.com to see if any official releases contained any material from this recording. The only official release of live material I could find was the BBC release, which includes some of their BBC recordings, and also a couple of cuts from an unknown show in 1970. There is another bootleg called "First Tooth", which contains some of the songs from this show, but not all of them. All the references I could find show "First Tooth" to be a bootleg, and not an official release.

Broadcast on WMMS-FM, Cleveland, OH.

Track List:
1 Waiting For The Wind
2 Cotton Growing Man
3 Old As I Was Born
4 The Mirror

5 Fantasy Satisfier
6 I Am The Walrus
7 Evil Woman

Mike Patto--Vocals & Keyboard
Gary Wright--Vocals & Keyboard
Mick Jones--Guitar
Val Burke--Bass
Bryson Graham--Drums

Spooky Tooth - Live West Berlin 1970

Spooky Tooth - West Berlin, Germany
December 1, 1970
FM Source @192

Spooky Tooth's show at a venue in West Berlin, West Germany, on 1 December 1970, plus some songs recorded for BBC Radio's Top of the Pops (exactly the same ones as on "First Tooth". The sound is slightly indistinct, but it sounds as if it's (ultimately) a soundboard recording. Pretty good show and recording.
