Peter Tosh - Live Veronica's Rocknight 1983

Peter Tosh - Live Veronica's Rocknight
Ahoy Hall
Rotterdam, NL

September 30, 1983
FM Source @flac

Veronica began its life as an offshore radio station, Radio Veronica, on 17 May 1960. The name comes from its first name VRON (Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland) Dutch for Free Radio Station.
Radio Veronica, which broadcast from a ship on international waters off the coast of the Netherlands between 1959 and 1974. The wave appearing in the logo hearkens back to that time. The name Veronica is a derivation of the abbreviation VRON (Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland / Free Radio Broadcasting station Netherlands).

After the pirate-activities became legally impossible (31 August 1974), Veronica transformed itself into the Veronica Broadbasting Association (Veronica Omroep Organisatie, short VOO), enabling it to gain a legal radio and television license within the Public broadcasting system. It finally got a licence on 28 December 1975. The first television broadcast of Veronica took of on 21 April 1976.

The Alarm - Hammersmith Odeon December 1985 BBC In Concert Transcription #372

I ran across this BBC Transcription disc in a used record shop.  I've seen a few of these on Ebay but the prices are usually way out of my price range, often over a hundred dollars (today there's a UB40 concert for $137.24, Michelle Shocked for $125.00....).  Because of those high starting prices I've stuck to the American releases on the London Wavelength shows, which are often drop a song or two to make room for advertising.

While this record wasn't cheap, it was reasonably priced for a radio disc and in good shape so I get to tackle a project that's usually too much for my limited budget.  There was no cue sheet, but I've included a 300 dpi scan of the disc.

The Alarm
Hammersmith Odeon
likely recording date is December 1985.

The Alarm played two shows at the Hammersmith Odeon on December 15 and 16.  I don't know which date was the source for this show.

Digitized directly from BBC Transcription #372 (issued in 1986).  No cue sheet, but I've included a scan of the disc label.  I cleaned up any clicks or pops in Audacity.

This version of the show has the following songs:

Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring
No Time To Live
Every Mother's Son
Medicated Goo
John Barleycorn
Shootout At The Fantasy Factory (not on original broadcast)
Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys (not on original broadcast)
Pearly Queen
Empty Pages
Glad
Freedom Rider

We originally had a mystery on this one. Two of the songs couldn't be from a 1970 show as they were written in 1971 and 1973.  I listened to a lot of bootlegs, trying to track down a source.  Eventually, I asked the Internet, and received the following from Hairbald:  "I am pretty sure those traffic tracks are the same ones that are on the live album from 73 and are from somewhere in Germany, I recorded that broadcast off the radio back in the day and noticed Low Spark was the same version but I haven't listened to it in years."

And sure enough:  I cross referenced the Westwood One tracks with the officially released "On The Road," and they were the same versions...in lower sound quality, and with some additional audience sounds overdubbed at the start and end.  This is another reminder to BUY THE OFFICIAL RELEASES.

We are left with one more mystery:

Wolfgang's Vault has this show up in streaming audio, and says, "The third song of the set, "No Time To Live," aired only during the initial live broadcast, is unfortunately not included. It is speculated that the BBC's recording equipment malfunctioned during this song as it was not included on subsequent transmissions of this performance and appears to only exist from inferior air checks of the initial broadcast."

In spite of that, this version does include "No Time To Live."

The original broadcast was introduced by the legendary British disk jockey, John Peel (edited out on this version).

Now.....this Westwood One show is a CORNUCOPIA of vintage commercials.  Yeah, I know most of you DO NOT CARE, but this one has an exceptional number of  interesting spots:

We get the Blasters and Los Lobos, "singing for Spuds" (as Neil Young put it at the time)...but we also get air checks from Mike Rutherford, a sniggering Alice Cooper,  Wang Chung, and Chicago Bears player Gary Fencik.

We've got a Jovan Musk commercial referencing 1980's mega-babe Jayne Kennedy!  Jovan Musk was a major sponsor of the Rolling Stones 1981 tour.  The Rolling Stones were paid $1,000,000.00 to promote the brand on their tickets during the "Tattoo You" tour.

And the host of the show, Steve Downes is now better known as the voice for "Master Chief" from the HALO video games.  Downes worked as a disc jockey at Los Angeles, California, Album-oriented Rock radio stations KWST (1978-1981), KEZY-AM (1981-1982) and KLSX (1994), but is remembered for working evening drive at KLOS from 1982 to 1991.

Some of the rebroadcasts of this show are:

1973:  BBC Pop Spectacular #50, air date ??/??/73
1978:  BBC Rock Hour #4,  air date 01/23/78
1981:  BBC Rock Hour #216, week of 04/19/81 (8 tracks, missing "No Time To Live" and "Stranger To Himself."
1986:  Westwood One In Concert #86-26,  9 tracks has "No Time To Live" but not "Stranger To Himself."
1992:  Westwood One In Concert 92-28
1997:  Westwood One Superstars In Concert #97-33
1999:  Westwood One Superstars In Concert 99-29 (8 tracks, missing "No Time To Live and "Stranger To Himself," four additional tracks are by Johnny Winter from another concert)
2004:  Westwood One Superstars In Concert # 04-04, air dates 3/13-3/14/2004, four songs (Who Knows What Tomorrow Will Bring, John Barleycorn, Empty Pages, Freedom Rider (cue sheet says Freedom Fighter.)

That's a short list...there are certainly dozens of other repackagings of this concert.

Quaker City Night Hawks - Torquilla Torquilla {No Longer Available} @224 Kbps

First off for those of you that are just here for the links or the tits (Hey Boss can you add some tits to this post please?) just go to the bottom of the text.  But for those of you that actually take the time to read this I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  The bullshit that I spew in text, below what  I post when I 'm trying to be clever or amusing only satisfies myself, (Frustrated Writers Syndrome) but if YOU get some enjoyment out of it then nothing makes me happier than knowing YOU took the time to read it and sometimes comment on it. Waitsfornoone2005(Dave) your the one that inspired this post. Speaking of commenting I'm just as guilty as the next guy for sometimes not leaving a thanks from the sites I visit and taking advantage of something that they have taken time out of their day for me to enjoy. But fortunately I have this forum to apologize for my lack of ungratefulness. SO FOR ALL THE SITES THAT I HAVE DOWNLOADED FROM PLEASE CONSIDER THIS A BLANKET THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE GREAT MUSIC YOU HAVE GIVEN ME. Speaking of which this brings me to my very own site, The Voodoo Wagon.  I have spoken to the Boss before by way of the telephone and seeing as how he lives three time zones away from me I probably well never in my life get to meet him. This guy has never once told me what I can or cannot say, what I can or cannot post. This guy has ALWAYS had the brothers and my back here at the Wagon. For my other BROTHERS that post here I will never get to meet any of you, but know this I LOVE YOU ALL and we are brothers, connected to among other things the music. At this point for the people who have already bypassed all of my ranting here and scrolled immediately to the link fuck you. I'm really on a Steve Earle kick now and for the life of me outside of Steve, and Tom Waits, I can't find any musician telling the truth or talking to me right now. Now Paul Westerberg doesn't really write songs that fit in the Mr. Earle or Mr. Waits genre but I still think he's one of the greatest songwriters America's got. In 2016 these are my heroes. Now to the Quaker City Night Hawks I guess they've had a few songs featured in the TV show "Sons Of Anarchy" but that ain't where I first heard about these guys I got em from Reverbnation. Here's another band that's gonna be doomed to life of obscurity because some fuck head radio programmer doesn't think they have enough AC/DC or Stevie Ray Vaughn in them. Or because they play their own instruments or they have something other than oooh baby oooh baby to say.  I love this. Highly Recommended. No back cover.

Charlie Burton & The Hiccups - I Heard That LP - 1985

Part of what we're doing here is promoting artists who were overlooked for one reason or another. Today's not-very-well-known LP is Charlie Burton & the Hiccups' 1985 LP, "I Heard That."

Burton's full bio is at his website at:  http://www.charlieburton.net/site/biography.htm
but to sum it up, he was a rock n' roll maniac recording in Lincoln, Nebraska, in the 1970s and 1980s.  He had been Rolling Stone magazine's C&W critic in the early 70s, topped the Village Voice's "Pazz & Jop" poll, and he won kudos from noted rock critic Robert Christgau....but never broke through to a national audience.

Geography counts: had Charlie Burton been based in Los Angeles instead of the Midwest, he would likely have garnered a major label record deal.  So... let's change that.  Burton was damned good, he was overlooked, and I want you to check him out.

By way of comparison, if you like Americana, rockabilly, and bands like the Beat Farmers... you are likely to find something here you like.  Most of his songs have a humorous lyrical bent, an amusing lyrical twist.

UPDATED CORRECT LINK:  Here's my digitization of the "I Heard That" LP:

While it's not on this LP, there's a great video of Burton's music at: https://youtu.be/-4GYwxu1X0Q

The video is lip-synced, with the look of local cable access (Wayne's World!) of the early 80s...but it's pretty damned great.  The premise is that you've got Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n' Roll on the emergency room table...  Burton gobbles pills while talking about Dr. Nick.....

"Well, wasn't that stimulating...."

Anyway...I was so impressed with the "I Heard That" album that I went and bought a copy, and I urge you to do the same if you like it.  Especially with these under-appreciated artists...we need to SUPPORT THE ARTIST.    So if you like this, pony up.  Guys like Burton have been knee-deep in the muck of the rock n' roll trenches and deserve some recognition.

Excellent sound quality.

This show is incomplete as the original files contained about 0:25 of one other song after 'The Golden Age Of Leather'.  What this song was is a mystery and as such has been dropped from this show.  Chances are it was 'The Red And The Black' as they had been ending their shows with that song around that time. Regardless, this is a great show.  Somewhat laidback with a few rocking moments.
Not many shows circulate from the Imaginos tour so this is a bit of a rarity.

Wipers - Greg Sage

Wipers - Live Amsterdam

I have always loved the guitar playing and general sound of the Wipers ever since I bought the cut out cassette "Youth of America". For some reason this band was thrown into the "punk" category because no one could really categorize their music. The Wipers were not very commercial or successful. Greg sage and the band made little if any money from their record label for any of their records. Nirvana was influenced by this band and covered the song "D-7".

The Circle was the Wipers sixth record. Released in 1988.

1. I Want a Way
2. Time Marches
3. All the Same
4. True Believer
5. Good Thing
6. Make or Break
7. The Circle
8. Goodbye Again
9. Be There
10. Blue & Red

Greg Sage (born 1952) is an American songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, regarded as an important influence on many punk rock and post-punk artists. Between 1977 and 1988, Sage was the principal songwriter of the influential Portland, Oregon-based band Wipers.
The mood of Sage's lyrics is frequently dark, and rife with references to confusion and severe alienation. His song structures often take unexpected turns and are typified by fractured melodic passages punctuated by massive, intricate guitar parts, usually played on a Gibson SG.
Sage has been involved in music professionally since the age of 17, when he worked on an full-length album by the professional wrestler Beauregarde (Beauregard, 1971; re-released 2004).
Since the demise of Wipers, Sage has also recorded several albums as a solo musician and operates his own label, Zeno Records, based in Phoenix, Arizona. He also builds musical equipment, including his own studio. Sage is also notable as a rare example of someone who plays guitar left-handed even though he is a naturally right handed
