Alex Chilton / Mountain Stage, Charleston, WV Feb. 9, 1992

Alex Chilton
Mountain Stage
Charleston, WV
February 9, 1992

01 Larry Groce - Intro
02 Alex Chilton - Te-Ni-Nee-Ni-Nu
03 Alex Chilton - Guantanamerica
04 Alex Chilton - Single Again
05 Alex Chilton - I'll Turn Your Money Green

Another low generation tape that I got in trade.  This is likely a first generation from the master, but it's not written down on the cassette or my list.  It's short, a mere four songs, but the sound quality is great and there's not a heck of a lot of live Alex Chilton out there.

====================================

Yeah...but the real reason I rushed this post here was to give some credit to one of our readers, Rudolf.

We've been looking into a Mellencamp promo CD that was only available in Canada:

Is it real or counterfeit?  Was there a U.S. issue?  You know...the usual obsessive collector stuff that we do here.

Well, Rudolf dug deep....

So...here's what we think we know:

The Garage Tapes Live In The Studio was hosted by Q102 (Dallas, TX) disk jockey Redbeard.  Redbeard also hosted the syndicated interview show In The Studio. This "Garage Tapes" show was distributed by the Album Network and officially issued as a promo in Canada.

There are several bootlegs on Discogs, including "John's Garage Tape (Unbelievable Music UM 002) and Live Rehearsals (Kiss The Stone KTS 090).  Both include 11 tracks from the Garage Tapes show, plus two acoustic songs (Pink Houses, Small Town), and two tracks from the 1982 KBFH show.  A third bootleg Welcome To The Garage (Beech Marten Records BM 068) has the Garage songs plus the two acoustic studio tracks, but drops the KBFH tracks and replaces it with a live version of "Like A Rolling Stone" recorded in 1988.

The two acoustic songs did not have an identified source on any of the three bootlegs.

Our reader, Rudolf, was exploring Redbeard's www.inthestudio.net website, which features tracks and interviews from a variety of sources. He found the two mystery songs are posted there, identified as being recorded on October 1, 1991, at Q102 in Dallas. Playing with Mr. Mellecamp are Mike Wanchic and Kenny Aronoff.  He took the time to compare them to the bootleg version, and they're defitinely the same tracks.

Another musical mystery solved!

Rudolf is hereby awarded a Voodoo Wagon No-Prize! Everywhere he goes, men will envy, and girls admire! Let's have a round of applause for Rudolph; he took the time to Scooby-Doo this so you can update your file tags with the correct dates.

Dave Alvin / Mountain Stage, Charleston, WV Nov. 10, 1991

01 Larry Groce & Dave Alvin - Intro
02 Dave Alvin - Dry River
03 Dave Alvin - Rich Man's Town
04 Dave Alvin - Fourth of July
05 Dave Alvin - Border Radio
06 Dave Alvin - Marie Marie

Another cassette....

I don't have the generation noted for this one, but it's likely a first generation.  Five songs, including two by the Blasters and one by X, plus the fabulous "Dry River," which mirrors my childhood if you replace the oranges with walnuts.  The version of "Marie Marie" is performed in a zydeco style, different to the Blasters original.

It's a great tape. The original recorder edited out some of the host's commentary.

Wiki says:
Mountain Stage is a two-hour music radio show, first aired in 1983, produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and distributed worldwide by National Public Radio (NPR). Hosted by Larry Groce from the show's inception until 2021 and currently hosted by singer-songwriter and West Virginia native Kathy Mattea, the program showcases diverse music, from the traditional to modern. It is recorded before a live audience, usually at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia, but occasionally travels to other venues elsewhere in the United States. Major private funding is provided by the West Virginia-based law firm of Bailey & Glasser LLP and the West Virginia Tourism Office.

Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï says:
Larry Groce had a Top Ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1976.  Climbing up all the way to #9, "Junk Food Junkie" was a novelty song wherein the singer pretends to be a natural foods enthusiast while secretly indulging his appetite for Fritos, Dr. Pepper, Big Macs, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
