Lou Reed - Wild Goin Wild *NOW BACK FROM THE DEAD THANKS TO THE BLOG THAT NOBODY READS

*BACK FROM THE DEAD FIRST PUBLISHED 8-2-19
*SPECIAL THANKS TO THE BLOG THAT NOBODY READS

So last Saturday was the second annual record show I sell at. Business was fantastic. I damn near did a grand in old vinyl and CD's that I no longer had a need for. Well..at said record show was a seller whom I have been dealing with for years. He specializes in boots. He told me he was getting out of selling his wares. Said there is no market for it anymore. But in the meantime I managed to cough up 200 dollars to buy his product. The whole time I was thinking of you and our blog sites. So all of my next posts will consist of stuff I bought from Mr. Boot Dealer. I'm sure some of these are on other sites but until you see me thanking the original poster these will all be my rips. So let's get started with a stereo soundboard recording of Sweet Lou from 2000. Great show here. Just turn it up a little. See scans

I'M GOING TO THE CAFE I HOPE THEY'VE GOT MUSIC AND I HOPE THEY CAN PLAY

Peter Tosh / Dominion Theatre, London Oct. 23, 1983

Peter Tosh
The Penthouse / Omni Magazine College Rock Concert CC 1016
LW's Limited Broadcast Week of January 22, 1984
Recorded live at the Dominion Theatre, London, UK on October 23, 1983

01 Intro - Pete Larkin and Richard Skinner
02 African
03 Coming In Hot
04 Not Gonna Give It Up
05 Where You Gonna Run
06 (You Gotta Walk And) Don't Look Back
07 Break
08 Glass House
09 Can't Blame The Youth/Dem Ha Fe Get a Beatin'/Babylon Queendom (Medley)
10 Johnny B. Goode
11 Mama Africa
12 Outro

Coming In Hot is listed on the cue sheet as Firing The Shot.

One of the songs was originally issued with two different names, it's Don't Blame The Youth, or Can't Blame The Youth.

A sharp-eyed reader spotted that this track (9) is actually a medley, and I've updated the track listing and retagged the files.  Or is that "sharp-eared?"  Either way, he picked up on the fact that the song is actually a medley of three songs: Can't Blame The Youth, Dem Ha Fe Get a Beatin', and Babylon Queendom.  I've retagged the file, updated the txt file, and uploaded it to reflect this new knowledge.

I'm awarding the very first Voodoo Wagon No-prize Award to Dan, for meritorious service to the cause of Voodoo Wagondom in catching my error.  The No-prize has no cash value, but is virtually priceless as it makes you the envy of everyone else in Our Beloved Audience.

The run out grooves get groovy with:
COLLEGE ROCK CONCERT #1016-A CC84-2
COLLEGE ROCK CONCERT #1016-B CC84-2

This the same show as BBC In Concert 318 (issued on LP), and also Classic In Concert 39 (issued on CD)  Both of these were issued only to radio stations.  The CD had a booklet listing the band members.  I've included a scan I found on Discogs.com..

The LW releases are often one or two songs shorter than the BBC transcription discs, but this release is identical across all three releases (BBC In Concert, Classic In Concert, and this release).
The tracks were released in 2012 in Europe as a bonus disc on Peter Tosh 1978-1987, a 6 CD compilation of Bush Doctor, Mystic Man,  Wanted Dread and Alive, Mama Africa, No Nuclear War and Captured Live.  This set also featured a disc of alternative versions (extended mixes, single edits), and a disc with this previously unreleased Dominion show.  The show has never been issued in the USA.  Obviously...if you like this, go track down and buy a copy of 1978-1987.

The Penthouse/Omni Magazine College Concert was produced by London Wavelength for five months from September 11, 1983 to February 12, 1984.  The show ran every week, with a 3 week holiday break from late December to mid January. The numbering was sequential, running 1000, 1001, 1002...1019, for a total of 19 shows.  Most were concert broadcasts, but at least three were interviews interspersed with released studio tracks. Six were repeats of prior London Wavelength shows from the BBC Rock Hour.

1000 Eurythmics broadcast 1983-09-11 Same as BBC Rock Hour #434 Eurythmics week of Aug. 21, 1983

There are several versions of this circulating; it appears there was a longer live broadcast of the concert, and this syndicated version was edited down from it.

16 Jack & Diane ****
17 J.J. Jackson - Westwood One Superstar Concert Series 03-11 Outro
18 J.J. Jackson - Westwood One Superstar Concert Series 03-11 Promo

The Intro says "John's set at last year's Farm Aid....and now, recorded September 21st at the Post Gazette Pavilion in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania..."   The first segment of the show is sourced from the 2002 show.

J.J. Jackson introduces the second segment as "We're off to the Verizon Wireless in Noblesville, Indiana where John Mellencamp brought the crowd to their feet at Farm Aid 2001 when he tore into this song...," and the Outro says "recorded at Farm Aids 94, 2001 and 2002."

Based on the deejay talk, you'd think the show was sourced only from 1994, 2001 and 2002.  However, that's not correct, as the second segment has two songs from 1994, two from 1997, and two from 2001.

We also run into a minor editing variation on track 14, (R.O.C.K. In The USA).  This song showed up on 02-31 with about 30 seconds of solo guitar noodling before they kick into the song.  On the version here on 03-11, the guitar intro is not included.

You get:  300 dpi scans of the two CD discs and the cue sheet.  Flac files of wavs.  The commercials are NOT included, but the announcer is left intact.

(Note: The Post Gazette Pavilion is (was?) 25 miles west of Pittsburgh, and as with many of these venues, went through a series of name changes Coca-Cola Star Lake Amphitheater, Post-Gazette Pavilion, Niagara Pavilion, KeyBank Pavilion, and most recently S&T Bank Music Park.)

Spooky Tooth - Witness & You Broke My Heart...(2 fer)

Spooky Tooth - Witness
Studio Recordings - @320

$49 at the 'Zon

I had some friends that loved this recording. Me not so much, I liked the earlier recordings better. This one never to reach any high points and seemed to stay pretty much the same tempo though out. Some have said if it wasn't for Spooky Tooth there wouldn't haven been a Foreigner. That could be a good thing or a bad thing depending or your point of veiw.

Bass Guitar – Chris Stewart
Drums – Bryson Graham
Lead Guitar, Vocals – Mick Jones (2)

Track List:
Cotton Growing Man
Old As I Was Born
This Time Around
Holy Water
Wildfire
Self Seeking Man
Times Have Changed
Moriah

While I agree with the general consensus that 'Spooky two' is their best album, I've always found this and the follow up offering 'Witness', also released in 1973 equally as enjoyable.
After the 'Ceremony' debacle that arguably derailed the bands journey toward the upper echelons of rock stardom, this feisty comeback album, the first to feature future 'Foreigner' guitarist Mick Jones, sounds to my ears like the natural progression for the band to take.
From the crunching blues rock of opener 'Cotton growing man' to the spooky (no pun intended) 'Moriah', all eight tracks exhibit the bands trademark soulful charm.
The addition of Mick Jones injects some guitar urgency to driving rockers 'This time around', 'Wild fire' and 'Self seeking man'. But underpinning the whole thing for me is the Fabulous vocal ability of the late Mike Harrison; surely one of the most underrated rock singers of all.
For me, on a few of the tracks the song writing borders on average, hence the four stars, but Mike Harrison elevates them to a pleasant listening experience as only top vocalists can.

This version recorded from the 3 LP syndicated radio show in November 2022.  Flac files of .wavs.  Includes 300 dpi scans of all six disc labels and the cue sheet. This show was bootlegged as Bluesharp (OH BOY 1-9109) in 1991.  While the title bugs me, (as I read it as "Blue Sharp" though I know it's "Blues Harp") things get worse when you flip it over.

So much worse that we're going to call in our pal, Dr. Strange to train the All Seeing Eye of Avocado (or whatever that gizmo is called) on the offending text.

On the original pressings (identifiable by the blue ink on the CD), it reads "Recorded live in Portland, Ohio 1987."

Charlie Kendall clearly identifies the venue and city in the Intro with "the Westwood One mobile truck caught up with the News in the Pacific Northwest, at the Portland Coliseum, to be exact" so there's no excuse for putting Portland in Ohio.  Although....back in the 1780s, Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory, but that's not the same thing as the Pacific Northwest.

The wrong state was corrected on the second pressing (with red ink on the CD), where it reads "Recorded live in Portland Oregon Memorial Coliseum" but now incorrectly fixes the date as "March 26, 1987."

As the cue sheet lists the broadcast date as March 28, that would mean they recorded the show on Thursday night, mastered and pressed the records on Friday, and delivered them to 400 stations across America on Saturday.

No, this is usual error of mixing up the date of the syndicated broadcast with date of the actual concert.

But once we make a mistake, it perpetuates itself.  It's even been inserted into Setlist.fm:

Mar 23 SIU Arena, Carbondale, IL
Mar 24 St Louis Arena, St. Louis MO
Mar 26 Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, IN
Mar 26 Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR  <<< ??
Mar 27 Rosemont Horizon, Rosemont, IL
Mar 28 Assembly Hall, Champaign, IL

So the band played two shows on the same day in venues separated by 2,200 miles?  I don't think so, but that's the Internet for you.

Setlists.fm also lists the two dates played in Portland, OREGON, which were:
Dec 17, 1986
Dec 18, 1986

Note that at the start of "The Power Of Love," Huey Lewis says, "Just like last night, I'd like to dedicate this one to Billy Rancher..."

Wiki says, "Billy Rancher was an American rock vocalist and songwriter, front man of The Malchicks, Billy Rancher and the Unreal Gods, and Flesh and Blood. One of the most prominent performers in the Pacific Northwest music scene in the first half of the 1980s, he died of cancer before reaching the age of 30...."   Rancher died on December 2, 1986, so it makes sense Lewis would dedicate a song to him two weeks later.

As Mr. Lewis mentions that he also dedicated the song the night before, it's likely this show is sourced from the second Portland show on December 18th, although WW1 often combined songs from different shows without clearly attributing them as sourced from difference nights or venues.

While there are a couple of grey market CDs with correct dates, such as:

Live From Oregon With Love Project Zip PJZ 502 says "December 17, 1986"

Hip To Be Square...Live (Klondike KLCD5029) says WAAF-FM broadcast...
Recorded live in The Coliseum, Portland, in USA on December 18th, 1986

...the streaming services are now making things even worse.

Spotify has this show listed as "Live Broadcast 18 December 1983 Memorial Coliseum, Portland OR (Live 1983 FM Broadcast)."  They took the time to look up that December 18, 1983 was on a Sunday,  too bad the show was on a Thursday in 1986.

Nice cover, but they're off by 3 years

Meanwhile Deezer has it as "Legendary FM Broadcasts - Memorial Coliseum, Portland OR, with a date of Dec 8, 1983."

Now it's the 8th in 1983? Wrong!

There's also a post of this show on Guitars 101, which identifies the lineage as
WAAF 107.3 Worcester FM radio >
Sansui 8 reciever >
unknown average quality cassette deck (dolby off) >
Maxell XLII 90 min. master cassette....

Which leads to The Oregon Report, issued in 2015 by FM Concert Broadcasts Ltd. as FMCB101CD...and the liner notes say it's "broadcast live at the time on WAAF."  So that one most likely is sourced from an FM broadcast downloaded off of Guitars 101.

This one here is right off the vinyl, no FM in the lineage.

I hope SilentWay is okay with me posting this right on top of his latest post (see below).  If it's a problem let me know!  Anyway...here's the latest Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï digitization project, and what I've learned about it by carefully studying the Internet:

bigcountryinfo.com says the following about this show:

"Broadcasted live on NBC radio on 22 March 1984 from The Opry House in Austin, Texas on 22 March 1984. LPs distributed to radio stations for broadcast after live broadcast beginning 27 July 1984.
* ‘The Storm’ was played on the live broadcast but was not included in distributed recordings.
Songs from this show are sometimes referred to as “The Texas Tapes”"

The show was released on Vox Humana released 17/12/2019 on Amazon (UK only) as “Touring With Big Country Live / American Radio Broadcast” (without commercial advertisements) and again (same label) as released 23/1/2020 on Amazon (UK only) as “Big Country On Tour / Live American Radio Broadcast” (without commercial advertisements)."

DISCOGS reveals this show was released on silver CD in 1993 as "Defrostin," on the Metal Biter label as MB 24.

Wonderland and In A Big Country were released as B-Sides on the "Where The Rose Is Sown" single (Mercury MERD 185) in November 1984.

"Porrohman" and "Chance" were released on the double-45 "One Great Thing" (Mercury BIGCD 3) in August 1986, on the second disc, listed as "The Live Texas Tapes.".

"Wonderland" and "Inwards" were released on the double-45 "One Great Thing" (Mercury BIGCE 3) in August 1986, on the second disc, listed as "The Live Texas Tapes Part 2".

It did look like a motel!
On the venue:  Austin Opera House, 200 Academy Drive, Austin, TX

Built in the 1950s as a motel and convention center complex called the Terrace. The ballroom of the Terrace Motel was converted to a music venue in the mid-70s. The building opened
as the Texas Opry House in 1974. Willie Nelson bought it as few years later and renamed it the Austin Opry House.  At some point, the name changed to the Austin Opera House.  The venue shut down in the 1990s and was eventually converted into offices and a music studio.

The stage

On the host:
Wiki says: "Rona Elliot (born February 22, 1947) is an American music journalist and interviewer of television, radio, and print. She was the first news anchor on music channel VH1[1] and music correspondent for NBC's Today show for ten years.

Elliot became program director for NBC's Young Adult Radio Network The Source in 1982. She is credited with first introducing American audiences to Band Aid’s charity single, Do They Know It's Christmas?"

On the ads:
Wiki also says: "Grandview, U.S.A. is a 1984 American comedy-drama film directed by Randal Kleiser and starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Carole Cook, Ramon Bieri, John Cusack, Joan Cusack, M. Emmet Walsh, Michael Winslow, Troy Donahue and Steve Dahl."

The groovy Run Out Grooves tell us this:
NBC-84-29-A   L18200 Alshire
NBC-84-29-B   L18200 Alshire
NBC-84-29-C   L18200 Alshire
NBC-84-29-D   L18200

You get:  a terrible scan of the cue sheet, I mean, it's just awful, it looks like it was shot on a cell phone.  You get 300 dpi scans of the disc labels, but Side 4 is a tiny bit blurry.  Not my best work, but I'm not going to go into the storage locker and find the record and rescan it.  There's also a full page magazine ad, most likely from Billboard.  I could not find a higher resolution version over in the Google Books archive of Billboard magazines, most likely they're missing the issue where it appeared. On Newspapers.com, I found an article from the Austin American Statesman done in advance of the concert, and their review of the concert "Big Country Shows Lack Of Experience."

Which said headline brings up something odd about the show:  the band plays their Big Hit Single twice.  Yeah, you get "In A Big Country" two times.

I'm not sure where they were going with the lyrics on the Plymouth Duster commercial (track #14).  The singer has been spurned by her friends, so she's going to drive around in her car:

"They givin' us the promises
of places far away
But when it came time to deliver
they were far away.... (hey!)
You'd say, "Hey, let's go dancing,
"Great," they quickly say
You'd sit and wait, and it grew late
While they were dancin' far away!
Now you can forget 'em, you're far away,
You're moving the wheels, the Plymouth kind.
You can forget 'em, you've changed your mind.
The Turismo Duster, leaving it all behind."

It's a heck of a sad story and Bruce Springsteen could have turned it into an epic if he'd needed one more song about cars, but I'm not sure how it makes me want to buy a Plymouth.  The music has a Pat Benatar vibe, it's quite good, as far as car ads go.

Your fake friends stood you up and went dancing without you, so buy this car and never think of those jerks again!
