The Au Pairs were a British post-punk band that formed in Birmingham in 1978 and lasted until 1983. They produced two studio albums and three singles. Their songs 

were said to have "contempt for the cliches of contemporary sexual politics" and their music has been compared to the Gang of Four and the Young Marble Giants. The band was led by Lesley Woods, who was once described as "one of the most striking women

in British rock".

This recording was made in 1977 at New York City's Bottom Line, when Booker T & the MG's had reformed to make Universal Language, a new studio album. The band having officially disbanding in 1972, the LP and tour came as an unexpected and welcomed event for thousands of soul music fans. The MG's, originally formed in 1961, had been the first interracial group to score a Top 10 hit in America, and soon after became the house band for the legendary Stax/Volt label.

I can't give you any structural insights or academic suppositions about how his music works or why I think it sounds so good. His music is completely unique. If you haven't heard it yet, go hear it. If you've already heard it and think it might make groovy sound effects, listen again. I would recommend the Chicago Symphony recording of Arcana on RCA (at full volume) or the Utah Symphony recording of Ameriques on Vanguard. Also, there is a biography by Fernand Oulette, and miniature scores are available for most of his works, published by G. Ricordi.
