Lou Reed - Live Around The World @224Kbps

I was thinkin' of things that I hate to do
Sex with your parents
Things you do to me that I do to you, baby
Sex with your parents

Something ugly and fatter than Rush Rambo
Something more disgusting than Robert Dole
Something pink that climbs out of a hole
There it was, sex with your parents

I was gettin' so sick of this right wing shit
These ugly old man scared of young tit an' dick
So I try to think of something that made me sick
There it was, sex with your parents

Now these old fucks can bend it all they want
You can't smoke this, you can't snort that
You can't light this and you can't inhale that
But me baby, I got statistics, I got statistics and I got stats
These guys been to bed when their parents

Now I know you're all shocked, hang and have a brew
If you think about it for a minute, you know that it's true
They're ashamed and repelled, they don't know what to do
They've had sex with their parents

When they looked into their lovers eyes they saw, mom, oh oh
In the name of the family values we must say, whose family
In the name of the family values we must say, hey senator

Ah, senators you polish a turd, here in the big city we got a word
For those who would bed their beloved big bird
Make a mockery of our freedom
Without even using a condom, without even saying, no
Ah God, we have a name for people like that it's
Hey, motherfucker

Sex with your parents
Sex with your parents
Sex with your parents

The Blasters - San Diego 1985, Spin Radio Concert

While SilentWay is cleaning up anything that might give the Digital Overlords a case of the fantods, I'm going to be moving a few posts over from FBSVIP.   Here's a Golden Oldie from a few years back....along with my notes at the time:

This is my first try at digitizing a SPIN Radio Concert. Here’s what I've put together from searches on the Internet:

SPIN Magazine launched in 1985. SPIN Radio Concerts were distributed to promote the magazine in 1985 and 1986. Distribution was on 2 LPs. Initially, two versions of the show were prepared, one with commercials and the other without. The records are numbered sequentially with an ascending alpha-numeric code following the pattern: C-001, C-002, C-003….or NC-001, NC-002, NC-003, with C = Commercial and NC = non-commercial.  Sometimes there are additional letters or numbers appended to the basic code.  The first show (Green On Red) didn't have a number.  According to Billboard, the Blasters were the second show in the series.   There's a Eurythmics show numbered as 001, though.  Perhaps it was broadcast later, or else Billboard was wrong.

Unlike most syndicated radio shows, national commercials weren’t included (at least at first...). The short commercials promoted SPIN Magazine, and spaces were left for insertion of local advertising spots. Live concert segments are interspersed with a band member in the studio discussing their music.

I have seen Ebay listings for Green On Red (no number given, but Billboard says it was the first show), Eurythmics 001, Blasters 003, Minutemen 004, Husker Du 005, Del Fuegos 006, Fear 007, Jesus & Mary Chain 008, Circle Jerks 009, and 10,000 Maniacs 011.  The Minutemen, Fear and Jesus Mary Chain shows also included tracks from other artists.  These shows are sub-labeled "Radio Underground" and the BBE Records logo has been added to the disc label.  The Radio Underground shows have an "U" appended to the number code.

Regarding this Blasters show, an article in SPIN said, “The Blasters, incidentally, will be the second artists featured in our new, 90 minute radio concert SPIN radio concert series. Our first concert, with Green On Red, airs around the middle of September, on different dates in different cities.”  While this article says 90 minutes, this Blasters show is only about 60 minutes long.  It's possible that with the insertion of local commercial spots, the show would have totaled 90 minutes.

There was also a sixty minute promotional cassette issued in August 1985 that had "excerpts from the Spin Radio Concert Series."  The cassette featured three groups:.  Blasters (San Diego Sports Arena); Green on Red (I-Beam, San Francisco); Del Fuegos (Spirit Club, San Diego).  It's LIKELY that these are sourced from the same concerts as the SPIN radio shows, but I haven't heard this cassette so I can't say for sure.  If they are the same, this gives us the venue for the Blasters show.  During the show itself, they only say the Blasters are playing "live from San Diego."

Just a few months after this series started, it looks like there was a split between the magazine and the radio show.

The 10,000 Maniacs show included a letter dated July 31, 1986 stating that Radio Underground is “no longer affiliated with SPIN Magazine and this will be the last concert that will carry the SPIN name."

In spite of that, the shows by Modern English numbered 012, Fine Young Cannibals 013, Cactus World News 0014, Meat Puppets 015, and Smithereens 016 continued the SPIN numbering system.  At this point, they may have dropped the "C" prefix and eliminated the SPIN commercials, as I've only seen "NC" copies.  Eliminating the "SPIN" name from the record disc labels took longer.   I’ve seen a picture of the FYC disc and it still has the SPIN logo.  However, the Smithereens no longer has it.

There’s a magazine ad that says these later shows were distributed by ERI (Entertainment Radio Inc.) under the name “Special Forces Concert," but that may not be true of all of them.   That looks like they were seeking a new sponsorship partner.  ERI lists an address of 11684 Ventura Blvd. in Los Angeles, while this earlier Blasters show is from SPIN Radio, 1965 Broadway New York City.  Some of the discs list both New York City and Los Angeles addresses on the label.

The Cactus World News show also includes a flyer stating the discs are “…a replacement for the SPIN Radio Concert. SPIN has terminated sponsorship of the concert program.” However, the front cover still has the SPIN logo on it. The Smithereens show includes a letter dated October 1986 mentioning a recent Red Lorry Yellow Lorry show that was ONLY sent to stations that took the time to return the affidavits of broadcast.

After this, it looks like the concerts were discontinued but SPIN continued programming with shows featuring album tracks.   Given the address change, and having to distribute two letters stating they were no longer affiliated with SPIN, something was going on... .I know SPIN temporarily discontinued publication in 1987 when Guccione, Sr. pulled the plug on the project and Guccione Jr. had to relocate and relaunch, but this predates that issue by months.

Records were cleaned with Titebond II wood glue. I declicked the files in Audacity. I don’t have the cues sheets. I scanned the four disc labels. Flac files of wavs. Commercials and deejay are tracked, but several tracks are cross-faded, so check before you leave them out. I’m not sure of the spelling of the deejay’s name, so it’s a guess. The mix seems to have the guitars a bit low (that’s my taste, not a criticism). I have one commercial disc (C-003) and one non-commercial disc (NC-003, so I suspect a mix-up somewhere.  If you like this, I recommend you buy “Testament – The Complete Slash Recordings” by the Blasters.

I don't have a problem with taking down the pictures of the girls to keep the blog up. What I have a problem with is Google's nebulous definition of "sexually explicit or graphic nude images" and them deciding  what is and isn't "graphic" or "explicit" and then torpedoing ANY BLOG they do not like.

Kathi McDonald - Insane Asylum (1974) {Out of Print}

From the Original FBS archives posted
Tuesday, June 22, 2010...

Kathi McDonald - Insane Asylum (1974)
Studio Recording @192

{Out of Print
}

Kathi McDonald's voice is so riveting, people take notice even when she isn't the main attraction. In fact, the strength of her voice is what landed the vocalist her first big professional gig when she was attending a concert and joined in as part of the audience. McDonald's powerful voice drew Ike Turner's notice in a club called the ~Winterland, and he invited the aspiring singer to his and Tina Turner's next rehearsal. McDonald had snagged a spot in the Ikettes, the Turners' backing group, without even trying. It was a heady and magical beginning for someone who never had any formal lessons. Born in Washington state in 1948, McDonald performed professionally for the first time around Seattle when she was 12 years old. At the age of 19 she set off for San Francisco and its burgeoning musical climate, where she met the Turners and, through her association with them, took the first step on a career path that would span more than three decades. Not long after the evening at ~Winterland, her talent caught the attention of Big Brother the Holding Company's Sam Andrew. McDonald threw her lot in with the band in 1969, leading to appearances on the albums Can't Go Home Again, How Hard It Is, and Be a Brother. She went on to sing with Mad Dogs Englishmen for Joe Cocker, and later sang with Leon Russell's Shelter People. Her session work included recordings for such artists as the Rolling Stones, Nils Lofgren, Rita Coolidge, Delaney Bonnie, and Dave Mason. Her work for other musical artists totals up to appearances on almost 150 albums, more than six dozen of which achieved gold status. In addition, McDonald also launched a solo career in 1974 with the release of the album Insane Asylum. The recording was arranged by Pete Sears, whose formal band associations include Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Insane Asylum featured performances by Tower of Power, the Pointer Sisters, Aynsley Dunbar, John Cippolina, Neil Schon, and Ronnie Montrose. Sales were disappointing, however, and the singer did not release another solo effort for 20 years, when Save Your Breath appeared. Above and Beyond followed in 1999, featuring contributions from Lee Oskar on harmonica and Brian Auger on keyboards. McDonald devoted more than two decades to recording and performing in collaboration with Long John Baldry, and the duo scored with their version of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" when it was released in Canada. In later years, she also contributed to the Seattle Women in Rhythm and Blues project. She reunited with Big Brother the Holding Company in California for a concert on New Years Eve, 1997. She was inducted into the Washington Blues Society's Hall of Fame two years later.

Kathi McDonald is a stunningly powerful singer and this is a brilliant star studded attempt at making her the next big thing. She stands toe to toe with some of the best musicians of the era and creates smokin' thunderin' blues rock. Since then her occasional attempts at come backs are all cool and some really sparkle, but this is the record that made me a rabid fan. St. James Infirmary with Sly Stone is one of my top ten favorite recordings of all times. Just take a peep at the all-star cast that support this recording.

Kathi McDonald passed away from undisclosed causes in 2012.

The Laughing Dogs Live @ 224Kbps

I'll bet we are the only blog in the world to put up The Laughing Dogs today. When I bought the "Live at C.B.G.B.'S" album years ago many of the bands on there impressed the shit out of me. They were The Tuff Darts, Mink DeVille, Manster, Stuart's Hammer, The Miami's. But the ones that impressed me the most were these guys. To this day I still love "I Need A Million" I bought both of their Columbia albums, liking the first better than the second. At one time these guys were the back-up band for half of The Monkees. Great pop reminds me a bit of The Replacements. Between draftervoi and the boss putting up great and obscure music I figured I should stick my two cents in. No covers. The Songs are

1. Intro/Get Outta My Way
2. Low Life
3. It's Alright, It's Okay
4. I'm Awake
5. Old Brown Shoe
6. Round And Round
7. Get 'im Outta Town
8. Johnny Contender
9. I Need A Million

The Beat, featuring Paul Collins / New George's, San Rafael, CA KRQR-FM

Paul Collins was in the Nerves, one of those fabulously "might have been" groups that was so loaded with talent that it's a pity the industry didn't know what to do with them in 1977.  The Nerves had Peter Case (who went on to be in the Plimsouls and have a successful solo career) and Jack Lee (who wrote "Hanging On The Telephone" for Blondie).  After the break up of the Nerves, Collins founded the Beat, who (unfortunately) are remembered more for being the band that made the British band the Beat be known as the "English Beat" in America.  That's sad, because the (American) Beat was a great, Beatlesque pop-rock band.

If you don't know this band, but enjoy the Power-Pop style, give this a shot; you're likely to enjoy it.

Mojo Nixon - Live The Casbah 2003

Mojo Nixon & the Toadliquors - Live at the Casbah
December 28, 2003
Soundboard recording @vbr

One of the most outsized personalities on college radio in the '80s, Mojo Nixon won a fervent cult following with his motor-mouthed redneck persona and a gonzo brand of satire with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Nixon had a particular knack for celebrity-themed novelty hits ("Elvis Is Everywhere," "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child," "Don Henley Must Die"), but he was prone to gleefully crass rants on a variety of social ills ("I Hate Banks," "Destroy All Lawyers," "I Ain't Gonna Piss In No Jar"), while celebrating lowbrow, blue-collar America in all its trashy, beer-soaked glory. All of it was performed in maximum overdrive on a bed of rockabilly, blues, and R&B, which earned Nixon some friends in the roots rock community but had enough punk attitude — in its own bizarre way — to make him a college radio staple during his heyday. As his audience grew, Nixon found himself accepting gigs as an MTV host, several small roles in what he described as "sh*tty movies," and occasional mainstream media attention (most notably debating Pat Buchanan on CNN over the subject of record censorship). Label problems helped decrease his visibility in the '90s, but he continued to tour and record for a still-devoted fan base, as well as working in radio.

Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant

Drunk Divorce Floozie

Gang War assembled themselves shortly after Kramer got out of prison. And through my usual exhaustive 5 minute Google research, I offer little else of anything worthwhile. I am not aware of the identities of the drummer or the bass player. Nor do I exactly care. For those with the ultimate details obsession, look it up and get back to me..

What I can tell you is that there is some fucking fantastic music contained herein. The recording is not as usally clear as I present. I'm not sure if this is an audience recording or maybe a slightly lo-fi SBD. You decide and get back to me
