Cranes - Wings Of Joy 1991 {Out Of Print}

Back From The Dead...Again
Originally posted September 25, 2014 and September 17, 2018

Cranes - Wings Of Joy - 1991
Studio Recordings @  VBR
Out of Print

This was and always will be one of the most haunting, beautiful, intense and O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L albums of the 1990's decade. The swirling screeching guitars, the crashing drums, the melancholy piano and Allison's sweet, haunting child like plaintive voice make up one of the most unforgettable albums of its time.

This album should be listened to as a whole since many of the songs blend together, still gems on here that deserve their own mention.

"Starblood" is one that is unmatched in its raw, primal, angry intensity and is as passionate as any great punk song. It is placed among songs like "Leaves of Summer" and "Adoration" which are as moving and sophisticated as any modern day classical composition.

Alison Shaw – vocals, bass guitar, acoustic guitar
Jim Shaw – guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums
Paul Smith – guitar, keyboards
Matt Cope – guitar
Manu Ross – drums

Track List:
1. Watersong
2. Thursday
3. Living and Breathing
4. Leaves of Summer
5. Starblood
6. Sixth of May
7. Wish
8. Tomorrow's Tears
9. Beautiful Sadness
10. Hopes Are High
11. Adoration

Fountain Point on Lake Leelanau, Michigan. The historic 1889 waterfront resort welcomes you to a summer season filled with great performances. James McMurtry was joined in this front porch performance by Daren Hess - drums, Ronnie "Cornbread" Johnson - bass and Tim Holt - guitar/accordion. This performance was recorded on Sunday July 14, 2013.

This is an artist as rare as snow in July. Please get aquainted with him. He writes songs that paint pictures and can also play the guiar as well as anyone out there.

There's a one-liner that Americana singer-songwriter James McMurtry is fond of delivering onstage — at the core, musicians are really just glorified beer salesmen. "We're basically the service industry. We're symbiotically tied to the club business. Beer sales and tips, you know?" McMurtry tells Rolling Stone Country. "I've seen a lot of young bands that think they're artists and they're not there to sell beer, but we want to keep the club happy, because if the club goes under we don't have a gig."

It's a cynical observation, which, for the acerbic McMurtry, is in keeping with his character. But it is also a show of solidarity with the hard-working class, be they songwriters and bartenders or the ranchers, fishermen and farmers whose struggles he sings about on his superb new album, Complicated Game.
