Helios Creed - Boxing The Clown {1990}

Did someone mention the band CHROME??

Helios Creed - Boxing The Clown (1990)
Studio recordings @VBR
{Out of Print}

Helios Creed is an American guitarist, singer and bandleader. He first came to prominence in the mid-1970s with the San Francisco band Chrome. They are credited with being the godfathers of what later became known as Industrial Rock music. The band Chrome broke up in the mid-80s when founding member Damon Edge moved to Paris. Helios then recruited some local hard rock musicians and launched a solo career.
~Wiki

Another year and another backing band for Creed; in this case it includes the great drummer Rey Washam, known for his work in the Jesus Lizard and on various other projects. With old bassist Duran back in the fold as well, Creed unleashed another modern psychedelic nightmare/masterpiece with the short but not-a-note-wasted Boxing the Clown. Opening track "Master Blaster" is another Creed highlight, with Washam's work the best, most frazzled accompaniment for the usual electric mayhem he whips up yet. Creed himself drops some massive riffs and mind-melting feedback, and his aggressive double-tracked bark/whine/moan is just plain gone. From there it's another plunge into the weird and wired world of Creed, with Washam's drumming and co-production abilities really helping out. The steady pound of "Sister Sarah" shows them at their best together, Washam's big wallop and Creed's usual fine work on singing and guitars both taking things to another dimension nicely enough. Creed is credited with also using a sampler this time out, and while there's not much to immediately indicate its presence or lack thereof in terms of overall sound, there's definitely the hint of him playing around more with spoken/sung elements, loops, and the like. Otherwise, the same generally compressed, intentionally artificial and very intentionally strange approach of the past is here, if given a new crackling buzz throughout. Vocals on a number of cuts are among some of the least prominent they've ever been in or out of Chrome, echoing up through the layers of noise that Creed has so thoroughly made his own. As always, there's a little surprise or two: "Go Blind," for instance, has a weird stop-start part to it that along with its relatively straightforward presentation could be the MC5 with a little more guitar wiggery.

Wall Of Voodoo - Live Columbus, OH. 1983

Wall Of Voodoo - Live The Newport
April 17, 1983
Columbus, OH.
(You Rate This) Audience recording @flac

Here's The story:
I've had a box of tapes in my house for the last 20 years. They came with me when I moved from Ohio. I was afraid my wife had put them in the attic where they would have melted. I have been looking for these for probably the last 5 or more years. My wife insisted they weren't with any of her stuff in any of the 3 closets she has her junk stuffed in. Guess what we found today and where. That's right, buried in one of her closets underneath and behind 2 tons of jewelry and jewelry making equipment, the box of tapes. I taped this show a couple of days after my birthday 1983. There is only 1 other person in the world that had this recording and that's my brother.
It took me all day Sunday to figure out how to get the computer, tape deck, sound card and speakers configured correctly and to digitize and turn this to flac for your enjoyment.
So I bring you a this Voodoo Wagon exclusive of a band with a fitting
name for this blog.

I love this band's quirky songs and the choppy rhythm type lead played by
guitarist Mac Moreland.
Their version of the song "Ring Of Fire" was used in the infamous porn movie Night Dreams. (Adults Only)

The Fillmore
San Francisco, CA
March 4, 1988
KFOG-FM

Digitized from high bias cassettes (TDK SA-X, TDK-SA, Maxell XL-IIS) June 2015.  The original broadcast had a few seconds of distortion in several spots, and a few seconds of radio static here and there, which I cleaned up as best I could.

Grace Slick makes an appearance, as does Will Scarlett.  If you like this, you can also see video of the performance over at http://www.musicvault.com/   You can also buy the original poster for the show for a mere $98.00 over at: http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/hot-tuna/posters/poster/F001.html

As it's a long show (over three hours), I split it into two files, one for the first set, and the other for the second set.

Bill Graham Productions had just reopened the Fillmore (this had followed a July 1987 fire that had permanently closed Wolfgang's, Graham's 600 seat night club)...and was the first of the classic 1960s acts to play at the reopened venue.

David Bowie / Westwood One Superstars In Concert CO 90-47 (Tokyo 1990)

On May 15 and 16, 1990, David Bowie played two shows at the Tokyo Dome.  The May 16th circulates from a soundboard and has also been extensively bootlegged on silver CDs.

Westwood One edited the show for syndication later in 1990.   The ambiance of the soundboard doesn't match the radio broadcast, with the radio broadcast sounding slightly better.

Westwood One released versions of this show at least eleven times.  That's an unusually high number of repeats from the same source material. To make things more confusing, they re-edited the show several times, adding and dropping tracks.  Usually, they repeated the same edited set list and changed the announcements and commercials...and occasionally swapped out one or two songs.

Show CO 90-47 (featured here) was the first broadcast of the show.  The next three broadcasts of the show (91-26, 91-45, and 92-15) dropped three songs (Starman, Life On Mars, Station To Station) and added three (Panic In Detroit, Modern Love, and The Jean Genie).    That second version is available over at a friend's blog, The New JDP....he's listed down there in the blogroll.

I've included an Excel file that cross-references the variations among the WW1 broadcasts.  The information is gleaned from the Internet so it may not be 100% accurate.

This is one of the first digitizations I did and for this one, I edited out the commercials.  Flac files of wavs, plus a 300 dpi scan of the paperwork and disc label.

Comments:
Great recording and great performance. Not one of the *very best* of this tremendous tour, at all; but it's still a must-have
It's the first night of the MSG run, and I think the whole band was kinda nervous. Jagger seems to loose his confidence, when there's a few bum-notes from the guitarists early on in the show.

This DAC release is the best sounding silver CD of this show, IMO
It's taken from Joe Maloney's torrent, which was shared on DIME last year - so it's the typical DIME-theft of DAC. Thanks to Maloney and his uploader-friend for sharing this great recording
(all previous 06/22/75 bootlegs were taken from a different audience recording....it was quite nice, but not as good as Joe Maloney's recording)

DAC did some EQ work....but in my opinion, it was quite successful.

I know this show has been on trackers before (rollover's torrent), but I'm uploading my silver-rip, since I know that somebody is still missing this DAC bootleg, and also; rollover's rip is not available on DIME anylonger.

Artwork included - taken from the web, originally scanned by rollover (thanks!)

Kaleidoscope – Incredible! Kaleidoscope {Out of Print}

Kaleidoscope – Incredible! Kaleidoscope (1969)
Studio recordings @ 320
{Out of Print}

The group was founded on democratic principles – there was no "leader". They soon began performing live in clubs, winning a recording contract with Epic Records. The first single, "Please", was released in December 1966. It was produced by Barry Friedman (later known as Frazier Mohawk), as was their first album Side Trips, released in June 1967. The album showcased the group’s musical diversity and studio experimentation. It included Feldthouse's "Egyptian Gardens", Darrow’s "Keep Your Mind Open", and versions of Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher" and Dock Boggs' "Oh Death". Crill, for reasons he never made clear (but ex-bandmates speculated had to do with concerns about overreactions from his "straitlaced" parents), was credited as "Fenrus Epp" on the first album and adopted various other pseudonyms on later recordings.
Between them, the group played a huge collection of stringed instruments in such psychedelic songs as "Egyptian Gardens" and "Pulsating Dream." They played fusions of Middle-Eastern music with rock in longer pieces such as "Taxim," which they performed live at the Berkeley Folk Festival on July 4, 1967.

Oingo Boingo / Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA KITS-FM

Here's a digitization of a broadcast by Oingo
Boingo, from the Live 105 (KITS-FM) broadcast of the "BFD" concert from 1994.  As with most of the sets from this show that I've uploaded, the show is a short set, but it's the entire show the band did that day.  I've left in a little bit longer portion of  both the Intro and the Outro by the KITS disc jockeys to give a feel of the slightly chaotic, unrehearsed nature of the "alternative rock" nature of the broadcast.

This is right off my master cassette, so the sound is excellent.

George Thorogood & the Delaware Destroyers
House of Blues
Chicago, IL
Westwood One Superstars In Concert #98-16
for broadcast the week of April 13, 1998

Announced as "Recorded August 16, 1997" during the show intro. Setlist.com has an August 15, 1997 show with a similar set list (it doesn't have "Gear Jammer" and "Move It On Over")
but does not list a show for for August 16.  Thorogood says "the Friday night jamboree and hootenanny is now in order" just before "Night Time," indicating it's a Friday night show.  August 15th was Friday.  My conclusion is that WW1 announced the wrong date and that this is August 15, 1997.

As usual, Thorogood plows through a big stack of classic blues, C&W and 60's Oldies with lip-smacking enthusiastic glee...as if he's got the greatest job in the world and he's the luckiest man alive.

This same show was repeated as WW1 Superstars In Concert 01-41 and 03-27.  Flac files of wavs. I've included 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and CD disc labels.

Verve Pipe / Kalamazoo State Theatre, MI - LIve From The PIt syndicated radio show

While SW is on vacation, I'm ripping a few radio shows to keep this place up and running smoothly.
I know the Verve Pipe from their big hit "The Freshmen" which is atypical of their sound.  This show has the band in post-grunge mode, noisy but still commercial enough for alt-rock radio.

I've seen a set list for an audience tape with two additional songs at the end of the show. The missing songs are "One Of Us" and "Anything, Anything."

The band was touring in support of their album The Golden Age, released on April 2, 1996.

Original drummer Charlie Quintana had left the band to tour  with Joan Osborne, with the drummer's chair being filled by  Johnny Hott from House of Freaks. The band was augmented by new member Kenny Margolis on keyboards (although he doesn't seem to be turned up in the mix on this recording).

David Lowery - guitar
John Hickman - guitar
Bob Rupe - bass
Johhny Hott - drums
Kenny Margolis - keyboards

Remember...if you find this of interest, you're probably going to LOVE the album that this tour was supporting:  THE GOLDEN AGE.   The album was re-released in 2011 is available on Amazon.  Support the artists and BUY THEIR ALBUMS if you like these live shows.

Don Henley - Westwood One Superstars In Concert #86-14

This was over on FBSVIP,  but it's time to move it over here.....This is a digitization of the 3-LP Westwood One Superstars In Concert show #86-14, featuring Don Henley, that I did in 2012.

In an effort to archive the entire show, I digitized all of it, including commercials, promo spots (Brian Wilson, Tom Petty, Joe Lynn Turner), and the Westwood One announcer.   I tracked all of these and clearly named the files.  If you want to burn this to an 80 minute cd-r, you can just leave them off.

300 dpi scans of the cover, the cue sheet, disc labels, and even a ticket image I found on Ebay.  No affidavit, though......:)

NOTES:
1)  This attributed to "Los Angeles" on the broadcast. Universal City is an unincorporated area entirely surrounded by the City of Los Angeles.

2)  I do not know the date for the show, but Henley was on tour during the summer and fall of 1985.  I have seen this show attributed to November of 1985.  I found a ticket image on Ebay that clearly shows that he also played there in September.  The ticket is included here, but is not intended as a claim it represents the date of the show.

3)  I included all commercials and promo spots.  They are clearly marked and tracked so you can exclude them from a CD-R burn.  The intention here was to reproduce the entire show as it exists on the discs.

4)  The tracks were manually declicked one click at a time in Audacity.

5)  Westwood One had a problem with their disc labels.
One disc has the number corrected by pen, and another has a typed
sticker glued on to it. Discogs shows there were 86-14 labels printed so my guess is they ran out, and used some left over labels.

6)  The Westwood One "affidavit" was missing from the set (presumably sent in to document that it had been played on the air).  Hence the (Almost) Complete in the title.

Tags or Labels, and Why We USe Them....

I have a feeling there are a lot of people that visit here that
don't know what "labels" or "tags" are.
If you do know what they are and use them, great.
If not this info my come in useful for you not only on this blog but on others as well.

"Tags" or "Labels" appear at the bottom of each and EVERY ONE of our posts.
Pictured below are the tags to a recent B.B. King post.

If you were to click on "B.B. King" or the words "FM Source" or "Pre-FM", you would bring up EVERY SINGLE POST WE HAVE EVER DONE with the same label or tag.
Even posts like this one. At the bottom of this post you will see "public service message" and "public service announcement".

So if you  want to go through over 6 years of our posts that have the same label or tag you
can do that.

That is the reason we use these tags. It makes it easier for you to find things you may be looking for.
We will gladly re-post anything we still have.

Please keep in mind that some of the authors that have posted before are no longer here and some of the posts I have put up have been lost to a few hard drive failures.

So feel free to place a comment on ANY POST you may find.
If the link is dead we will try and re-post that show for you if possible.
