We've got 300 dpi scans of all four disc labels and the cue sheet, and I've added some press coverage about the gig and the band to keep you reading writing by humans instead of AI generated junk-commentary.

The Stray Cats had three shows on NBC's The Source:

82-43 and 83-10 are sourced from the Ritz, New York City, NY November 28, 1982 and have identical set lists, but different commercials.

We've already posted the 83-10 version of these tracks. The songs here are the same, the announcements and commercials are different.  The vinyl on this has some minor surface noise during the quiet portions but no issues once the band gets rock n' rolling.

I don't know the source of the live tracks on 83-48 but it contains at least two live tracks not sourced from the Ritz ("Hot Rod Mama" "Sexy and 17"), so it's likely they're from another concert.

This was part of a Christmas countdown run of shows, where the Source ran several shows a week in 1982 (they repeated the Christmas countdown in 1983, too).  As an added bonus, they brought in the vocal talents of Don Pardo as the second announcer.

Another of the cassettes from the Sam Elliot's Moustache Collection.  This one is from the second incarnation of the Stray Cats during the latter half of the 1980s.

Setzer had broken the band up at the height of their fame in 1984, then relented a few years later.  In 1986 and again in 1989 they issued albums, to less interest from radio and the public than before.
This broadcast finds the Stray Cats at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studios, famous for its association with the Philly Soul sound. The O'Jays recorded Backstabbers LP there, the Stylistics albums, and MFSB's TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) were recorded there.  When David Bowie "went soul" for the Young Americans album, most of the record was recorded at Sigma.

But what about this tape, which has nothing to do with soul music? 

Well, it's the Stray Cats, so you get the usual fleet-fingered fretboard fireworks from Brian Setzer.  The setlist mixes songs from the early 80s records with the current record ("Blast Off") they were promoting.  Plus...they do covers of "I Fought The Law" and "Twenty Flight Rock" which didn't turn up until on an official release until the 1990s.

The Stray Cats played at the Trocadero on May 12, and I've included a review of the show.
Sam Eliot's Moustache emailed me the following about the Sigma Sound sessions:  "The Sigma Studio shows were not advertised except on air. These were intimate shows recorded in a recording studio with small audiences. I believe you had to call in and win tickets to the shows, but I am not quite positive about that. They were trying to re-capture the feeling of the mid 70's broadcasts that WMMR used to air sporadically back then. Bonnie Raitt, Springsteen, Zevon did broadcasts there back in that time period."

New York is the home of this group. For approximately four years, they have been known as the Stray Cats and they went to the top, against all trends and expectations. At the end of the '70s, Brian Setzer (then 19), Slim Jim Phantom and Lee (both 17) decided to found a band to realize their own musical preferences. Their outward appearances were kiss-me-quicks and tattoos; a little guitar, drums and contrabass as the instruments.
The Stray Cats wanted to play rockabilly for the '80s, but they didn't want to be one of those many revival bands who were satisfied with copying songs and heroes of an over 25-year-old style. Especially Brian Setzer, guitarist, singer and composer of the band, had followed the musical developments of the late '70s. Short songs without long solos, fast and to the point arrangements and lyrics that dealt with the here and now built the substance of the Stray Cats.
But even in colorful New York, there weren't many possibilities for a rockabilly band of that kind. They received an offer from London that wasn't quite serious, but the Stray Cats accepted. For three months, there was nothing going on, but finally supported by several performances in important London clubs, and due to the efforts of a female publisher, other musicians, like Dave Edmunds, and the music press in England began to be interested in the three. It was really brave of them to go on- stage with such instruments. Many came to their shows to see whether this was serious music or not. And it worked. Dave produced a first single with the Stray Cats called 'Runaway Boys', a few weeks later it hit #1 in the British charts. Successful tours and festival performances followed.
Finally, in 1982, the band's homeland, the USA, also understood that the Stray Cats were something special. There the group is experiencing a repeat of the European enthusiasm. The performance at the Rockpalast Loreley Festival on August 20th will be their first after a break that lasted over a year. The Stray Cats will present their own version of Rockabilly at this festival, too. They never interpreted this style the old way. For them it's just the fun of being on-stage and letting it all hang out.

For airing the weekend of 8/12/83 (but the disc label specifies "For broadcast on August 13, 1983.")

The number 83-7 is not on the disc label, but scratched into the run-out vinyl on both sides of each disc as SSCS 83-7.

The summer of 1983 was the premier of Westwood One's Superstars In Concert Series, with eleven shows aired, starting on July 2nd. "Every weekend through Labor Day a radio station in your area will be presenting one of Rock’s biggest performing acts in concert."  Print ads indicate that "over 400 stations" had agreed to broadcast the shows.

The series returned with monthly shows from January through May, and then ran weekly during the summer of '84....and ran twice a month during most of the Eighties.

This Stray Cats Toronto show was also broadcast as Westwood One In Concert 83-23 (aired Nov.11, 1983) and was also bootlegged several times.  Most recently it's been released as a "grey area" CD under the title "Toronto Strut."  This is new digitization, a direct copy of the original broadcast discs.  Flac files of wavs.  300 dpi scan of the cue sheet, record label, and box cover included.
