Juice Newton played the Crazy Horse Steak House & Theatre on Monday April 4 and Tuesday April 5, 1988.  The review in the Los Angeles Times mentions the Monday show was recorded for Westwood One. 

The same tracks were repeated on Westwood One Presents 89-40, with one exception: "Queen of Hearts" was replaced by "The Sweetest Thing"

This is one of the "Live From Gilleys" shows that was live, but not from Gilley's Club...in spite of the name of the show.  

On Tuesday July 12, 1988...just two weeks before the broadcast date of this show, a Houston jury awarded Mickey Gilley $17 million and ordered his former partner Cryer to change the name of the nightclub.  

The lawsuit had been filed in April 1987 and ran through the end of July 1988, and the copyright over the name "Gilley's" and the right to use it was part of the lawsuit. How that affected Westwood One is unknown at this time, but they began recording shows at other venues, and the following year rebranded the show as "Westwood One Presents."

Includes 300 dpi scans of the disc labels.  There's a scan of the cue sheet, which incorrectly says it's show 84-11.  The date on the cue is the same as the October date printed on the disc labels.  If the cue was really for 84-11, that would indicate a show in the spring of 1984.  

There WAS a Juice Newton Westwood One concert from earlier in the year, and I found a print ad for it, and that's in the Artwork file just to make note of it.  It is possible the earlier show was 84-11 and someone at Westwood One mixed it up with the later broadcast.  Westwood One often repeated the concert material, swapping in new commercials and announcements. The commercials on the cue match the commercials on the show, so the only thing out of place is that number 84-11.

I also included newspaper print ads for the concert from 1983. The ads show the concert branded as part of the Salem Spirit Concert Series.

Salem is a brand of menthol flavored cigarettes and named after the hometown of the brand; Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  It's not named after the location of witch trials of the 1690s.

The sponsorships involved heavy promotion of the cigarette brand, with concert signage and free packs of cigarettes handed out at shows.

The Salem Spirit Concert Series for 1984 featured Alabama as the headliner with Juice Newton and Thrasher Brothers as support acts.  

I've included a few articles on the sponsorship. Corporate sponsorships were middling controversial at the time; Neil Young wrote "This Note's For You" three years later in 1987 as a response to the creeping commercialism.

But if is wasn't for the commercialism, the desire to sell national advertising commercials promoting products such as Budweiser beer, Trident gum, and Crest toothpaste, we wouldn't get to hear this Juice Newton show. 

By the way, as usual, I need YOUR help.  There's an unidentified band in the Budweiser ad here

The Startrak shows were primarily "profile" shows, where an artist's career was discussed, interspersed with tracks from their albums. There were concert shows, every few weeks.  A lot of the concert shows were shorter edits from other Westwood shows such as the Superstar Concert or In Concert but there were unique shows that only turned up under the Startrak name, and sometimes the Startrak shows had a few tracks not on the corresponding Westwood shows.

The CDs are extremely rare but not too expensive when they turn up, as most of artists are not considered highly collectable.

Mr. Bungle were known for their distinctive musical traits, often cycling through several musical genres within the course of a single song. Many of their songs had an unconventional structure and utilized a wide array of instruments and samples. Live shows often featured members dressing up and an array of cover songs. An ongoing feud with Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis escalated in the late 1990s, with Kiedis removing Mr. Bungle from a number of large music festivals in Europe and Australia.
Although Mr. Bungle went through several line up changes early in their career, the longest serving members were vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Danny Heifetz, and Clinton "Bär" McKinnon on saxophone and woodwinds.

Critic Steve Huey wrote in Allmusic "Mr. Bungle is a dizzying, disconcerting, schizophrenic tour through just about any rock style the group can think of, hopping from genre to genre without any apparent rhyme or reason, and sometimes doing so several times in the same song."

The show featured short interviews with live in the studio performances.  This was the era of "MTV UNPLUGGED" and Coffee House Sessions is very similar.  With a distribution of only a few hundred copies, these shows are very rare and only turn up a few times per decade on Ebay.

The show featured lesser known names who don't have a lot of circulating live material.

On this show, Pat DiNizio mentions that the show is recorded at Quad Recording in New York City.
One of the Holmes Brothers songs is incomplete.  The CD had aged, and the file would not extract properly.  I tried three different burners, and different programs, but it just could not extract anything but glitchy audio.  The good news is that this was very short, and it fell during a guitar solo, so the edit is not obvious.

In January 1976, Neil Diamond triumphantly returned to performing after a four-year hiatus, during which he’d focused on himself and his family. The following month he travelled to Australia, where he played a triumphant series of shows as part of his ’Thank You Australia Tour’, covering material from the breadth of his career. The rapturously received final performance on March 9th 1976 – in front of 38,000 fans at Sydney Stadium – was telecast across 37 stations.

Back on July 20th, our pal XRay posted a classic Roxy Music bootleg, "Foolproof - The 1975 Tour Of The United States."

My niche here at the VW has been radio shows that I digitize, but I was like, INSPIRED, man, and thought, "Hey, maybe I oughta do one of those, too!"

This is a classic bootleg I downloaded off the Internet several years back.

As a lot of you may have this already, I wanted to do something to upgrade the package.

I declicked the files.  I did not "remaster" the recording; I just cleaned up the surface noise.
I added newspaper clippings, including five original print ads, press coverage in advance of the concert, and Robert Hilburn's review of the show.

There are several circulating versions listing the date as April 13.

As you can see from the newspaper ads, there was no show on the 13th.  Due to "heavy demand" a second show was added.  The first show was scheduled to start at 8:00 P.M. on April 12, and the second show at 11:30 P.M. "the same day."

It is possible that the second show started after midnight which would make it the 13th, but the show itself was unquestionably scheduled to start before midnight on April 12th.

Several sources say this was from an FM broadcast.  I have found no evidence this was broadcast on an FM station. There are no station identifications during the broadcast, no disk jockeys before or after the show.  Yes, the bootleggers might have edited them out.

While there weren't a lot of cassette recorders or reel-to-reel decks in 1974, in the Los Angeles area I think there would be multiple sources for an FM broadcast of Mott the Hoople.  Glam was a big deal in Los Angeles.  All the versions I've heard seem to be from the same source.  Yes, absence of a second source doesn't prove this was not broadcast.

Concerts were being broadcast in the Los Angeles market.  KLOS-FM was simulcasting ABC's "IN CONCERT" television show.  So there might have been a broadcast.  I just couldn't find any sort of confirmation, or uncover which station was the source.

Thank to reader Derek, who pointed out the rip I downloaded was missing the track "All The Young Dudes," which, however, was not recorded at Santa Monica but sourced from a 1972 recording in Philadelphia.
