I did this one a while ago, so I didn't look at the runout grooves.  I'll track those down and add 'em later.

I'm heading off this weekend to see Los Lobos with my wife, grandson, brother, two children, and my ex-wife, so I figured I'd jump the gun and put this up even though there's no runout grooves.

Someone at Westwood One must have thought "Two roots rock bands with Spanish names are a great idea for our In Concert show!"

Well, it WAS a great idea.

Both shows took place at the Kentish Town and Country Club in London, and both were edited down from longer concerts.  Besides the U.S. Westwood One show, both were pressed up as LPs for the BBC Transcription Services.

But as usual, we have a Scooby Doo Rock and Roll Mystery: What was the full set list at the Town and Country show?

The Los Lobos show was broadcast twice by Westwood One, as 87-12, and also later the same year as 87-26 (which is in our archives).  The BBC also issued it as BBC Transcription Service In Concert 408. There is also a version posted at Archive.org.  There's another version on Guitars101. There's also a version that claims to be taken from the original radio station reels. Some have songs that are unique to that version.

I usually spend hours trying to make sense of this stuff, but I'm throwing in the towel on this one.  All of the versions have good sound.  So, if you like this, download the other Los Lobos Westwood One show from our archives and go look on the internet for the other four versions.  They're easy to find.

Here's something new! I've been looking at EBAY listings for...twenty years now?  Running searches and looking for syndicated radio shows at an affordable price.  And never, not once, have I run across a Mundo Artistico show. A few weeks back, two of 'em turned up. AND one featured Los Lobos, one of my favorite bands.  I bid on that one and won.

The V-W research team found that Mundo Artistico began in 1985. This is from 1987. I didn't find any listings for 1988, so it looks like it only lasted a couple of year.  That's not confirmed; we're looking for facts.

The set list was intriguing...all of the songs were in Spanish.  As the Mundo Artistico show was from 1987, I suspected the show was sourced from the Kentish Town & Country Club in London.  Announcer Ernesto Cevera says the concert was "en concierto desde Londres, Inglaterra" ("in concert from London, England").

But here at the V-Dub we won't just accept his word, Westwood One sometimes screws things up, so I start comparing tracks.  A comparison of "La Bamba" with the Westwood One In Concert version proved the two songs are identical recordings, confirming Kentish Town & Country as the source concert.

There are at least six circulating versions of the Town & Country show, with six different track lists.  The show was syndicated on Westwood One In Concert IC 87-12, IC 87-26, and BBC Transcription BBC 408.  There are two versions on Archive.org, and another version claimed to be from the "10 inch radio reel." Songs are swapped in, and out, all the versions scramble the songs in different orders. 

There are a total of thirty songs on these six versions.  This is more songs than a typical Los Lobos set list at the time. One of them ("My Baby's Gone") appears in two different versions on Westwood One In Concert 87-26.  Bands don't usually repeat a song twice unless they're out of material.  All of this suggests there may have been two shows (perhaps an early and a late show) recorded.

I have not found any evidence for two, though. I have "entertainment blurb" listings for the concert, and it does NOT advertise an early and a late show.  I also found a review by JOHN PEEL, and he says nothing about two shows. All I can say is there are a lot of tracks supposedly from the Kentish Town & Country show, and there's no confirmed running order, and there's the mystery of a song played two times.

It's a mess!  I've included a file that lists the variations in tracks.

With all the versions out there, you'd think that everything from it had been released.  But on Mundo Artistico, "Los Ojos de Pancha" turns up for the first time...bringing our total up to thirty-one songs.

So there's something new here for Los Lobos completists...PLUS that John Peel review.

The second artist on the disc is Beatriz Adriana.  I'd never heard of her.  The English language Wiki gives almost no information about her. She's "a Mexican singer of ranchera....She has a recognized artistic trajectory in her country of origin."

That's a stilted phrase if I ever heard one.  

The Spanish language version reveals she's issued twenty-nine albums and dozens of "super-exito" compilations over the years.  She's still out there on tour, again playing Houston this June in 2025.  

I enjoyed her music here; it was a refreshing change from the rock music I pound into my head every day, preparing radio shows for you to hear.  I urge you to give it a try.

On the commercials...we have McDonald's advertising a "delicioso Egg McMuffin sandwich" on an "English muffin tostado."  

I love it when the background singers shout "English muffin! Viva! Viva!"  That's a rallying cry if I ever heard one!

Good morning, Voodoo Wagon gang!  One of Our Beloved Audience mentioned they like Los Lobos, so I dug out another forty year old cassette and got to work.

Here's the bad news about this show:

The tape is a stereo soundboard, but it's not mixed.  The guitars, drums and bass are on the left channel, vocals, saxophone, and accordion are on the right. There's a dropout in one channel for twenty seconds on the first song.  It's a few copies down the line, so there's tape hiss.

Here's the good news:

Maybe because it was the last night of the tour, the band stretch out at the end of the concert. A cover of Howlin' Wolf's 300 Pounds of Joy leads into the band introductions, followed by a jam with musical "riff quotes" from Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky" and the Allman Brothers "Mountain Jam" (which itself referenced Donovan's "There Is A Mountain), into a song I don't recognize, and then "La Bamba," all played as one long twenty-two minute piece of music, with some weird sliding guitar parts on La Bamba.  It's slightly different than what they normally did at the time.  

And the tape hiss isn't that bad.  As an added historical bonus, I've uncovered the newspaper ad for the show, and a review of the concert from the Oregonian. 

As a side note about the times:  in 1985, accordions were (along with ukuleles) not "cool instruments."  It was the sort of instrument your grand-uncle pulled out at a family reunion and tried to fumble through the chords to "Lady Of Spain."  More than any other band, Los Lobos changed that perception.

I've also added a very clean copy of the Los Lobos Budweiser commercial into a separate folder as a VOODOO BONUS TRACK.  Back in the '80's and '90's, Budweiser hired bands to sing the "This Bud's For You" jingle. But unlike the 1960's Coke commercials where the lead-in would clearly state something like "It's Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, sharing a Coke together..." there was no mention of the band's name.  The artist performed the jingle in their own style, and it was up to the listener to figure out who did the ad.  There was a sense at the time that commercial art was beneath the dignity of rock music.  By not specifically naming themselves in connection with a product, the band kept filthy commerce away at arm's length.

The Los Lobos commercial, though, is a brilliant work of commercial art.  They put effort into it.  Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo trade lead vocals back and forth, come together on a nice harmony part, and there's swingin' accordion and saxophone lines.  The two singers even took the time to have one of them say "Anheuser Busch" and the other finish up with the "Saint Louis, Missouri" finale.

Jeez, I wish Neil Young had done a Budweiser ad.

G'morning, Voodoo Wagoneers! The ex-wife asked me to burn her some Los Lobos live shows, so I'm tackling tapes today.

Not everything is gold, though.  This I-Beam show has an annoying electric mains hum throughout.  The hum is not too bad when the band is playing, but they also are taking their sweet time between songs.  If this was a Ramones show where the songs ends and a second later it's ONE TWO THREE FOUR into the next song, I wouldn't even mention it.

But the hum is there, so be warned.  

The show itself is full of songs that at the time were unreleased. Tracks 8, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, and 21 were unreleased.  "La Bamba" as a hit Top 40 single was several years in the future at the time.  The sound is fine when the band is playing, and the interesting set list means this one isn't for completists only, but that hum can't be avoided.

A spectrum analysis revealed it's not a single frequency but is full of harmonics, so I can't just run a notch filter to get rid of it.

I had this in a box for forty years marked "April 1984" with no specific date.  Once again, Newspapers.com had the original ad for the show, revealing that the date was April 30.  I didn't find a concert review but have included a contemporaneous newspaper article about the band.

Oh yeah...it's a soundboard tape, low generation so hiss isn't much of an issue.

Okay, Voodoo Wagon gang, here's another multi-generation tape I got in a tape trade through Goldmine magazine back in the '80's.  It is LIKELY that my copy is first generation from a master of the original broadcast, but I don't know for sure.  I got this in a trade from a great guy in Tokyo that sent me a lot of great tapes, so it is very likely his cassette was a master of the original broadcast.  Anyway...it's sourced from a great sounding tape, and if you like Los Lobos, you're very likely going to love it.

Okay, gang, here's another multi-generation tape that might be of interest to some of you...This one is hissy between the songs, but sounds pretty good when the band is playing.  It's an all-acoustic and all-Spanish-language Los Lobos show recorded at Santa Monica's McCabe's Guitar Shop.  Does anyone in our Audience have a lower generation copy of this show?  If so, can you upload it and provide a link?

Los Lobos / Wells Fargo Theatre, Los Angeles, CA May 16, 1996 FM broadcast

While this is from KFOG-FM, the introduction says it's a "Warner Brothers Music Showcase" broadcast, which suggests that this was a national broadcast that was likely multi-cast on more stations than just KFOG.

The sound quality is about as good as it gets, as I used a metal high-bias cassette (not that you care about the technical details...).

As is often the case with Los Lobos shows, they include a cover of Don Santiago Jimenez Sr.'s "Ay Te Dejo En San Antonio" from back in the 1940s.  Great song!   You can hear the original on YouTube.....I can only follow about half the Spanish, but here are what the lyrics are (according to the Great and Powerful Internet).

Don Santiago is the father of Flaco Jimenez.

We had a recent request for a re-post of a Los Lobos show, which we couldn't fulfill.  However, I happened to have a tape in the basement that needed to be digitized so here's Los Lobos playing a noon-time in-studio radio show.  The songs are from their albums "The Neighborhood" and "Colossal Head" so it's not the usual "La Bamba" era set list.  I hope you like it.  This is straight from my master copy of the broadcast. Los Lobos Earthquake Relief Concert 1989

This one's for you, Mr. Mumbles.

This is from a broadcast in support of victims of the October 17 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. It's a stereo FM broadcast, most likely from KFOG-FM. During one song they break away from the band for a pledge break. You can BARELY hear the band in the background but I've left the pledge break in, in spite of the marginal musical content.  I think it's valuable for the historical context, it's not every day you have an earthquake.

This is from my master cassette so the sound is very good.
