The Tony Williams Lifetime - Unreleased Recordings

Back From The Dead...Again
Originally posted January 5 and 2010, August 30, 2015, again November 5, 2020

The Tony Williams Lifetime
Unreleased Album 1974
aka - Lost Wildlife Tapes
Studio Recordings @320

Track List:

02. Hot & Sticky

04. Happy Tears
05. The Spirit

Tony Williams: Drums
Allan Holdsworth: Guitar
Webster Lewis: Keys
Jack Bruce: Bass
Laura "Tequila" Logan: Vocals

Tony Williams was a fan of rock music, and when he left Miles he formed the fusion band Lifetime, a trio with Larry Young and John McLaughlin. After leading other versions of Lifetime (one of them starring Allan Holdsworth), Williams stuck to freelancing for a time, studied composition, and toured with Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. band. By the mid-'80s, he was heading his own all-star hard bop group which featured Wallace Roney as a surrogate Miles Davis and a repertoire dominated by the drummer's originals (including the standard "Sister Cheryl"). After breaking up his longtime quintet in 1995, Williams gigged a bit with a trio, recorded a very interesting set of original music for the Ark 21 label, and seemed to have a limitless future. His premature death makes one grateful that he started his career early and that he was extensively documented. ~

The Tony Williams Lifetime
Turn It Over (Redux)
Bill Laswell Remix
Unreleased remixed studio recordings @ 320

tiburon noted:
In 1999, Bill Laswell decided to re-imagine this seminal jazz fusion album. However, Verve Records refused to release the album once it was completed, claiming it would never sell. However, it was released on CD-R directly to a small music shop in New York City frequented by Bill Laswell himself, the Downtown Music Gallery.

A rare, unreleased version of The Tony Williams Lifetime album, Turn It Over. Expanded, remixed, and remastered by Bill Laswell from the original Polydor master tapes. This unabridged version of the complete album includes four unreleased cuts, and five longer unedited versions from album sessions - which was intended as a double LP but only released as an editied single LP. Cover art by Russell Mills, liner notes by John Szwed. Thanks to Bill Laswell for rescuing, and finally giving a proper mastering to match William’s original intentions, to this most seminal, groundbreaking recording, mixing jazz, rock, prog and metal years ahead of virtually everyone else!

Brought to you through the efforts of the Collective For Live Music.

Our pal Sam Eliot's Mustache found this audio on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1mZCtJZJWI&t=1849s

He recorded the streaming audio, burned it as WAV files and sent it to me to chapter.

I chaptered it but also took the time to remove several hundred bits of (what I think is...) radio static.  I didn't get everything but it's improved over the streaming audio.

I want to note that while this is "flac files of wavs" it is most likely "lossy" - streaming audio is usually not CD quality audio.  I lack the expertise to analyze the stream (I could figure it out but I have to go to work in an hour...).  Saving as a wav allows us to burn CD-rs so it makes sense and compressing them as flac to save space is also smart. I just want to call out that this is not a direct transfer from a reel source.

The gang felt that this was an historically important show; the start of the rise of syndicated live concerts distributed nationally. This outweighs the fact we didn't record this ourselves and can't verify the source.

It sounds very good; there's virtually no hiss that I can hear.  Some "hum" that's probably 60 Hz and the 120, 180, etc. harmonics...which could be stage amps and monitors.  Whatever this is, it's really good quality and a great historical document of a vintage radio broadcast.

My guess is this is recorded off-the-air from WNEW in New York. The other announcer (not Bill Minkin) is a female disk jockey; she's inserting intro and outro remarks, and a WNEW-FM station identification.  The commercials are for Newmark & Lewis, which the internet tells me was based in the New York area (mainly Long Island).  I note that the vocal talent on these commercials have a regional New York accent that stands out to my West Coast California accent ears.

The YouTube channel has a print ad for the show as a graphic; I haven't been able track a high-resolution
copy of this down yet.  Does anyone have access to Rolling Stone magazine archives?

One really weird thing about this show was Springsteen's choice of song. His debut album was released six weeks prior on January 5, 1973.  Now... if your first album was out there, and you had a national performance platform, what would you do?  Well, I'd pick my single "Blinded By The Light" and play the friggin' heck out of it.  What I wouldn't do is pick a song that wasn't on the album...and wasn't on ANY album for the next 25 years (it finally turned up on 1998's "Tracks.)"  But that's what he did.

Another weird thing about the past:  High profile rock bands played high schools.  Blood Sweat & Tears are playing a high school here.  The Kinks played at my high school (Ygnacio Valley High School, Concord, CA) in the summer of 1970.  Miles Davis played at our cross-town rival, Las Lomas High School. Santana played there, too.

----------
Also... I "asked the Internet" and got a Bing Copilot response that I cut and pasted into a jpg in the artwork file.

It says, "the show was special as it marked the reunion of the band after lead vocalist David Clayton-Thomas rejoined the group."

I didn't hear Clayton-Thomas's distinctive vocals on this at all.  He's not there, and Concert Vault says it's Jerry Fisher.

This is just wrong.

And in point of fact, they do NOT play "Hi De Ho (That Old Sweet Roll)," "Spinning Wheel," "Lucretia McEvil," or "You've Made Me So Very Happy."

This is our future: we ask the Internet, and it gives us incorrect information.

Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï says, "Please do not believe everything you read on the internet, including this sentence."

The download was corrected Thursday November 20, 2025 to include the name of the WNEW announcer, Alison Steele, "the Nightbird."

Love, Devotion & Surrender

When I first listened to these recordings it quickly reminded me of the David Crosby album "If I Could Only Remember My Name",which had been released some years earlier, I think it was 1971.

Smooth sounding instruments, acoustic guitars, harp, bells and unusually for McLaughlin:vocals

If you like the Crosby, try this one, too.
For special moments to calm down; if you wanna get away from the bustle of everyday life or if you only need some meditative or spiritually stuff to listen to.
A modern word: "Healing Music".
This is the right one.

.......................

In 1984, John decided to form a new electric band and christened it “Mahavishnu” (with the missing “Orchestra”), the band consisted of the then very young Jonas Hellborg, Bill Evans(the sax player), Billy Cobham, Mitch Foreman and Danny Gottlieb.
The group recorded an album in mid 1984 titled “Mahavishnu”. It was right before the recording sessions of the “Mahavishnu” album that John finally managed to make it to India on a tour with Shakti. The original four members of the group got together in April, 1984 and did a short tour of India. This was perhaps the finest sounding Shakti ever, the members had matured in their own way and Shankar was playing his double bow
stereo violin, which added a character to Shakti that cannot be described in words. It was a deadly combination. Sadly for some unknown reasons, this reunion was short lived and lasted for a month. There was however indication from the shows that the tour was perhaps intended to go beyond India, but it never did materialize. Right after this tour, John returned to France and started work on the recording of the “Mahavishnu” album and one track, “When Blue Turns Gold”, featured Zakir Hussain on tabla and most unusual of all, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia on flute. This partnership with Hari Prasad Chaurasia
would not blossom further until 1997 with the formation of “Remember Shakti”. After recording the "Mahavishnu" album, McLaughlin and Mahavishnu would then play at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 1984.  In 1985, John joined Miles in the studio to record “You’re Under Arrest” and also played a small role in the film “Round Midnight”. John also did a small tour with Jonas Hellborg as a duo and also continued to tour with the Mahavishnu band. In late 1986, John played on the outstanding Zakir Hussain solo album “Making Music”, which also featured Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Jan Garbarek. The Mahavishnu band came to an end by late 1986 and John did two short tours as a duo, the first was with Paco De Lucia and the other was with Jonas Hellborg (similar to the one back in 1985).

It was not until 1988 that John came back with a proper band, which was called the John McLaughlin Trio featuring Trilok Gurtu on percussion and various bass players over the lifetime of this band including Jonas Hellborg, Jeff Berlin, Kai Eckhart, and Dominque Di Piazza. This Trio recorded two albums "Live At The Royal Festival Hall" (1990) and "Que Alegria" (1992), the former was a live album while the latter was a studio recording. During this period, John also explored his love for classical music and recorded the classically influenced “The Mediterranean" in 1990. The JM Trio finally disbanded in 1992 and John was ready to explore new frontiers.

**Original Notes**

The initial classic lineup of the Mahavishnu Orchestra lasted less than three years and only released two studio albums and one live recording during this era, but these recordings had a profound effect, redefining the jazz/rock fusion movement. Combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the volume and energy of rock music, the group created music that was often intricate and complex, performed by musicians whose virtuosity thrilled audiences, musicians, and critics alike.

By early 1973, the Mahavishnu Orchestra had firmly established their reputation and with little over a year of live performances behind them, they had become one of the most exciting bands on the planet. This partial February 1973 performance captures the group following the release of Birds of Fire and several months before they recorded the live album, Between Nothingness and Eternity. Recorded at Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire, this is yet another stellar example of the band's blazing energy and fluid virtuosity. Now an established headliner, the Mahavishnu Orchestra had more time onstage and they seized that opportunity to explore in greater depth. This set captures the group as they were diversifying the onstage repertoire and extending their improvisational approach.

The performance begins with the pairing of the Inner Mounting Flame's leadoff track, "Meeting Of The Spirits," with "Open Country Joy" from Birds Of Fire. While both remain aligned with the album arrangements, here they feature extended solos, often explosive and pummeling in their ferocity. Open Country Joy," a strutting, gradually intensifying urban blues is perhaps the least complex composition the classic lineup ever played, vacillating between a laidback county feel and frenzied rocking power.

Although brief, "Hope" unfolds in an elegant, magisterial way, before Cobham suddenly blasts off into "Awakening." This too has moments of frightening intensity and the telepathy between these musicians is functioning at an astounding level. Hammer takes an impressive solo here, simultaneously playing bluesy Fender Rhodes with gurgling mini-moog embellishments. It eventually becomes a duel between McLaughlin and Cobham, and this is unison playing at its most astonishing. McLaughlin doesn't let up for a second, interjecting an endless barrage of ideas, while Cobham often does more with a hi-hat and snare drum than most drummers are capable of with an entire kit.

The recording concludes with McLaughlin's tribute to Miles Davis, "Miles Beyond," with the group again displaying breathtaking improvisational abilities within a funkier context. Dominated by Hammer, who offers a barrage of demented sounds from his keyboards, this also features Jerry Goodman propelling the basic groove with McLaughlin, Laird, and Cobham providing rhythmic punctuations and accents.

Every concert from this era of Mahavishnu Orchestra is astonishing to some degree and this is no exception, featuring the original lineup at the pinnacle of their powers.

Thanks to the original poster and source!

John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham - Montreux Jazz Festival 2010

 John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham
Montreux Jazz Festival 2010
Montreux, Switzerland
July 2, 2010
BBC FM Source @224

Radio presenter Jaz Nelson:
The Mahavishnu Orchestra performed in 1971, unleashed a series of cosmic… fusion albums until ‘76 when their inner mounting flame grew too hot and they imploded. They got together briefly in 1984 and then disappeared again until at last one day last July when guitarist John McLaughlin just happened to be hanging out on the banks of Lake Geneva when he got a call from his old friend Claude Nobs telling him that a band had cancelled that night and Claude said, ‘John, do you fancy getting back together with Billy Cobham and playing some Mahavishnu tunes?’

Thanks to tom_phillips who shared the tracks on Dime. Tom noted: “John McLaughlin’s last minute ad-hoc reunion with Billy Cobham, recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival last July. Suberbly recorded and demonstrating the John hasn’t lost his chops (where has he been for the last 25 years?), it is only short highlights…”

Certainly shows why the Mahavishnu Orchestra should never be overlooked.
