18 10,000 Maniacs - Don't Talk
19 10,000 Maniacs - Cherry Tree

This is set of 10,000 Maniacs demo tapes for the "In My Tribe" LP that I got in trade on a cassette back in the late 80s.  The same sets of songs, in the same order, were pressed up on a bootleg CD in 1995 on BLAST Records, supposedly a British record label with the ritzy address of "15th floor King's Reach Tower, Stamford Street London SE1 9LS."
"Borag thungg,
Voodoo Wagon Earthlets!"

In researching the bootleg geography, I found that there's a pop cultural thing with that building: 2000 AD is a British sci-fi anthology comic book.  Tharg the Mighty, an alien from a planet orbiting Betelgeuse, has been a running gag since 1997 as the fictional editor of the comic book.  His office (i.e., "command module") is in (you guessed it) King's Reach Tower.  I was hoping to find that Tharg was on the 15th floor, but the address was "Tharg, 2000 A.D. King's Reach Tower, Command Module 2012, Stamford Street, London SE1 9LS, England, Nr Europe, Earth, first star past Centauri, Milky Way Galaxy, Continuum No. Beta Z."  No 15th floor, as I had hoped.

An address like that might be a really obvious comedy riff to our U.K. contingent, but it's lost on a Yank like me.

But I digress, as usual.  The point I was trying to make before I got lost is these are NOT from that bootleg CD.  The sound on these cassette versions may be better...or worse.  On my cassette, track 11 was listed as "Cure Song."  The bootleg CD says the song is "The Biggest Chain."  Whatever it is, it is NOT a cover of a song by the Cure, so I'm going with the boot's nomenclature.  The boot, on the other hand, lists track 13 as "unknown," when it's another take of "Verdi Cries."  How do you correctly identify "Verdi Cries" for track 12, and not hear that it's the same song on track 13?  Do bootleggers even listen to the music?
Where's the camera?

Well, I do. I try and clean this stuff up for Our Beloved Audience, too. There were LOOOOOONG silences between the songs, 10 to 15 seconds.  I edited those down because who wants to listen to tape hiss?  Life's too short for that, man... I did not try to remove the hiss.

If any of our readers have the tracks from the bootleg CD, could you check to see if this is better, or worse?

Flac files of wavs, digitized from one of Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï's creaky old cassette tapes!

Also, I see our The Boss is working on something behind the scenes, and here I am jumpin' the gun early on a Sunday...feel free to drop your next project today, boss!  I've got another one that I'll be putting up this afternoon!  It's a SUPER SUNDAY here at the Voodoo Wagon!  Tell your friends! :)

Bourgeois Tagg - Demo, cover of Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows"

Bourgeois Tagg - Tomorrow Never Knows with "Within You Without You" solo section.

As I was going through old cassettes recorded off the radio, I found this Bourgeois Tagg demo tape stuck on the end of an unrelated concert.  It's a cover of the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows," with the instrumental break from "Within You Without You" added in the middle.  As a Beatles fan, I found it to be interesting, so I'm sharing it here.

I looked at the Bourgeois Tagg discography on Discogs.com, and it's not listed as ever having been released.  There is a version of it up at YouTube under the heading Bourgeois-Tagg "Tomorrow Never Knows" (Not Utopia) but it's not the same take as this version.  That one is from a live concert (and I hear "thank you KFOG" at the end, so it's probably from a KFOG broadcast).

I just went and ran a search on Guitars 101, and yes, there's a KFOG broadcast by Bourgeois Tagg.  There's still a live link, so if you like this, grab it while you can.

John Hiatt Demo Tapes 1975-1983

John Hiatt
Demo Tapes 1975-1983

01 I'll Get Out Of This
02 Something Happens
03 It Hasn't Happened Yet
04 Ambulance Chaser
05 If I Can Love Somebody
06 I Only Love You
07 When You Cut Me I Bleed
08 Everybody's Girl
09 Fast Life
10 This Fire Is Burning
11 Midwestern Town
12 Modern World
13 Sleeping Tight
14 Spanish Dancing Eyes
15 Still Dumb
16 Zero House
17 Wild World (Cat Stevens cover)
18 The Crush
19 Eight Men, Four Women (O.V. Wright cover)
20 Falling Up
21 The Way We Make A Broken Heart
22 My Edge of the Razor
23 Something Happens

I'm not sure if the "1975-1983" part is true.  That's how this was labeled when I traded for it back in the late 1980s. Most of the songs here released by Hiatt or covered by other artists seem to fall in 1980-1983, so I want to call out the 1975-1979 reference as questionable.

I don't know the generation, it's low, but with hiss.  It's mainly noticeable between tracks. Hiss removal usually make the music sound weird, and since the music sounds okay, I just applied fades on the hiss between the songs to make it less annoying.  My tape also had LONG gaps between each song, 8 to 20 seconds, so I tightened that up.

Several of these songs turned up on John Hiatt albums. Dave Edmunds covered "Something Happens," Frankie Miller did "If I Can Love Somebody," Amos Garrett did "Everybody's Girl."  The Searchers covered "Ambulance Chaser" but it wasn't released until this century.

There's also a bunch of songs about which I could find no reference on the Internet, so I'm guessing at titles.

I gotta say...an O.V. Wright cover?  That's pretty groovy!

UPDATE:  Our friend Anonymous supplied us with some corrected titles, so I've followed his recommendations.  I've retagged the files with the corrected titles and added his comparison of these tracks to previously circulating demo tapes.

Crust - The Complete Crust (As Far As I Know)

From the Original FBS archives...Back From The Dead As Requested
Original post March 15, 2009 and February 19, 2020

"It never got weird enough for me."
~Hunter S. Thompson

Crust - The Crust Chronicles (Original post March 15, 2009)
Renowned for their skull-grinding sonic cataclysms and bizarre stage antics, Crust was the band that initially inspired Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey to launch Trance Syndicate Records in 1990. Multi-instrumentalists John Hawkins, Richard Smith, and Jerry Page began playing together in 1987 as Mud Honey. The trio's musical approach was a post-industrial mishmash of found objects, bleating samples, taped voices and tribal rhythm. After changing their name to Crust to avoid confusion with the Seattle grunge act, they began attracting attention on their own with scatological serenades like "Chemical Pattie" and performances featuring duct tape G-strings filled with worms and flaming pubic hair. 1990's Sacred Heart of Crust EP was a thunderous exercise in sacrilege, and their desecration of Morris Albert's "Feelings" from 1991's eponymous LP was no less disturbing. 1994's Crusty Love took the band in a more rock-oriented direction, but their playful penchant for the perverse was fully intact on "Chlamydia Is Not a Flower" and its accompanying Nick Smith-directed video. A memorable 1995 South by Southwest showcase gig found Crust pelting its audience with more than 100 loaves of bread. After parting ways with Trance, the band was unable to find a label to release their third album, Food Eater. With intra-band squabbles growing and show attendance declining, Crust broke up in 1997. The trio played a reunion show at Room 710 in 2004.

(Notes From Original Post)
Anyone who has followed this blog has probably noticed the wide variety of music that gets posted by myself and the others around here. Being an affectionado of artists like Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Hunter S. Thompson, Salvador Dali and others like them, it is probably not to strange that I have a great love for niche bands like Oingo Boingo, The Tubes, The Butthole Surfers and others.

Crust is one of those niche bands, buried so far down in the cracks of musical history very few people have ever heard of them let alone heard them. These guys were kinda disturbing, weird, scarey and above all sickly humorous. Loosely categorized as avant-garde punk grind noise art rock. Think of a heavier Residents on some questionable acid.
I've supplied a couple of video clips and music samples so you can check them out. This music is NOT for the "play-it safe, non-adventurous" visitors we may have, and definitely not safe for work.

I'm almost willing to bet that we have less than 10 people who will download any of what gets posted. Don't be scared. Prove me wrong.
One thing I do know though, this is right up my man Bonger's alley.

Jonathan Richman - demo tape, early 1980s

Jonathan Richman
tape given me by background singer...
various demos, early 80s

01 Someone To Hold Me
02 The Neighbors
03 Don't Change For Me
04 Better
05 Stop This Car
06 Underneath
07 I Can't Stand To See People With Their Feelings Hurt
08 Stop This Car (#2)
09 We Can't Go Wrong
10 The Fenway
11 In Love Again
12 Top To Bottom
13 Not Yet Three
14 You're The One For Me
15 The Morning Of Our Lives
16 Don't Change For Me (#2)
17 Up In The Sky
18 The Neighbors (#2)
19 Dick Gregory

Several of these songs may be the same as the six song so-called "Jonathan Goes Funky" demo tape which circulated on several blogs circa 2008: the titles "Someone To Hold Me," "Don't Change For Me," "The Neighbors," "Better," and "Somebody To Hold Me" match up, but there is no "My Name Is Jonathan."

The rest match up with the tracks that circulate as "The Jonathan Sings Sessions."

I don't have those for comparision, but discovered that they're out there (or were out there) on the Internet while researching this tape.

THIS version comes from a cassette I was given by one of the lunch waitresses at the Rusty Pelican restaurant in Alameda in 1984-85, who was rehearsing as a background singer with Mr. Richman at the time.  It was a low bias TDK D-90 cassette. I don't have the other circulating versions for a comparision...so this may be WORSE...but it might be better, so I'm tossing it out there.  There's hiss, but it's not overwhelming...and given that I got this over 35 years ago, the number of generations is fairly low. I don't want to discourage you from downloading it, but my "thing" has been master tapes, so I want you to know that this is NOT from a master.

If any of Our Beloved Audience can shed any light on how this compares with what is already out there, I would sincerely appreciate it.  If it's not as good (or worse) let me know and I'll take it down.

*Notes*
Shawn Lane (1963-2003) had insisted that he record what would become "Powers Of Ten" by himself and his label agreed, so armed with a sizable equipment budget he purchased an entire multitrack recording set up (in the pre ProTools days) and sometime in 1990 installed himself in the conference room of Memphis' Kiva Studios. What you hear are preliminary mixes of compositions that would make up the bulk of "Powers Of Ten", plus one track from Shawn's other solo studio effort, "The Tri-Tone Fascination". Several tracks' titles were unknown by your humble servant as they didn't make commercial release, these tracks are interesting in that context as they represent musical directions Shawn himself felt for whatever reason didn't merit a public audience. Also included are snippets of Shawn playing solos of various styles, showing his enormous diversity of musicianship. Lastly included is "Stratosphere II", an unaccompanied solo piece he had recorded for Shrapnel Records' (long out of print) compilation "US Metal Volume IV".

Quicksand - B-Sides And Rarities

Quicksand is an American post-hardcore band from New York City founded in 1990. Their debut self-titled EP was followed by two major label albums, Slip and Manic Compression. Quicksand's sound has been compared to that of post-hardcore bands Fugazi and Helmet. The band supported their releases with extensive touring but fell short of the mainstream success anticipated by their labels. These factors and internal stress led them to separate first in 1995 and again in 1999 following a failed year-and-a-half reunion. In June 2012, Quicksand reunited for a special one-night performance and since has been playing additional live shows. The band has reportedly been working on new material.

Steve Earle - The Alternate Copperhead Road

Steve Earle - The Alternate Copperhead Road
Studio Sessions @ flac

lineage: ??>CDR trade>EAC>flac (level 8, sector boundaries aligned)
42:04 minutes

   1. Copperhead Road
   2. Snake Oil
   3. Back To The Wall
   4. The Devil's Right Hand
   5. Johnny Come Lately
   6. Even When I'm Blue
   7. You Belong To Me
   8. Waiting On You
   9. Once You Love
  10. Nothing But A Child

This collection of demos with band has a more country-orientated feel
than the final version of Copperhead Road, and thus seems more like
the logical successor to Exit 0. Certainly an interesting listen,
but it often ends up sounding a little emasculated by comparison
with the full-blooded snarl of the released album.
