Luther 'Snakeboy' Johnson - They Call Me Snake

Back From The Dead...
Originally posted April 30, 2009

Luther 'Snakeboy' Johnson
They Call Me Snake

Studio recordings @256
Discontinued & Out of Print

The confusing plethora of artists working under the name of Luther (nickname here) Johnson can leave even those with a decent knowledge of blues in a major state of confusion. But in this biographical entry, we concern ourselves with the life and times of Luther "Georgia Boy/Snake Boy" Johnson who, to make matters even more confusing, also worked and recorded under the names Little Luther and Luther King. (It turns out his real name wasn't even Luther, but Lucius.) Upon his military discharge, he picked guitar as a member of the Milwaukee Supreme Angels gospel group, working the local church circuit. But the blues bug hit and he soon had his own little blues trio together, eventually settling in Chicago by the early '60s. He played for a while with Elmore James and was a regular fixture in the Muddy Waters band by the mid-'60s. He recorded as Little Luther for Chess in the mid-'60s ("The Twirl") and by 1970 was relocated to Boston, MA, working as a solo artist. The next five years found him working steadily on the college and blues festival circuit before cancer overtook him on March 18, 1976, at a mere 41 years of age.

Coco Montoya - Live Jazzbones 2008

Back From The Dead...Again
Originally posted January 30, 2009 and February 24, 2016

Coco Montoya - Live Jazzbones
April 8, 2008
Tacoma, WA.
Soundboard @192

Though he grew up as a drummer and was raised on rock & roll, Coco Montoya became an
outstanding blues guitarist in the '90s after stints in the bands of Albert Collins and John Mayall. Montoya debuted as a leader in 1995 with the Blind Pig album Gotta Mind to Travel and garnered an award for Best New Blues Artist at the following year's Handy Awards ceremonies.
His first album with the Bluesbreakers came in 1985. Mayall had not released an album in five years at that point and the Bluesbreakers had been dead for more than 15, but the live album Behind the Iron Curtain proved Mayall's viability thanks mostly to the fiery work of Montoya. The guitarist appeared on three studio albums with Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, but then struck out on his own by the mid-'90s. Signed to Blind Pig, Montoya released Gotta Mind to Travel in 1995 with help from Mayall and another former Bluesbreaker compatriot, rhythm guitarist Debbie Davies. After years of toil under Collins and Mayall, Montoya was finally in the spotlight and his award as Best New Blues Artist of 1996 proved quite ironic, given his years of experience. His second album, Ya Think I'd Know Better, was followed by 1997's Just Let Go. At that point, Montoya and Blind Pig parted company and he signed with Alligator Records.

Otis Taylor - Monterey Jazz Festival 2007

Back From the Dead...
Originally posted October 6, 2009

Otis Taylor - Monterey Jazz Festival

Excellent WBGO FM Source @320

By his mid-teens, Taylor was already playing guitar and harmonica in his own groups, the Butterscotch Fire Department Blues Band and later the Otis Taylor Blues Band. He also formed the T&O Short Line with legendary Deep Purple singer/guitarist Tommy Bolin before retiring from the music business in 1977 to become a successful antiques dealer. Taylor returned to music in 1995 with albums reminiscent of John Lee Hooker's work, albeit with a more minimalist bent. But it wasn't until 2001, when Taylor started to play what he calls "trance blues," that people really took notice. The recording White African's haunting rhythms and dark lyrics revealed a bluesman unafraid to expose social wounds.

...Probably an upgrade from anything you may have.

Lester Butler (born in Virginia, November 12, 1959 – May 9, 1998) was a blues harmonica player who achieved fame with the Red Devils Blues Band, which backed such notables as Bruce Willis and Johnny Cash in Los Angeles performances. He achieved his greatest fame in the Netherlands, where Lester Butler tribute bands still perform. He had rhythm, melody, and soul … and a classic understated way of putting it all together.

Back from The Dead...by Request

Jo Ann Kelly - Tramp 1974
(Reissued 2000)
Studio Recordings @192
{Out of Print}

The British blues singer/guitarist Jo-Anne Kelly (1944-90) was a little-known treasure. She was a member of the same generation of musicians as the Rolling Stones, but she was more interested in reviving prewar country blues than in popularizing postwar electric blues. Jo-Anne sat in with the Yardbirds in early in their early Clapton days, had a long association with The Groundhogs, and in the 1970s did a stint in the blues-rock band Tramp. But mostly she played acoustic guitar and performed in folk music clubs. She was a regular support act for American blues musicians of an older generation touring England, such as Fred McDowell and Big Joe Williams.
Jo-Anne didn't record much, and her records were hard to find in the shops - certainly in my country(Australia). Those that that I did lay my hands on revealed a powerful voice and a driving, rhythmic guitar style. Her heroine was Memphis Minnie.

Digitally remastered 2001. A great mix of previously unreleased & rare live & studio sessions (14 tracks, over 65 minutes of music). Features contributions from Fleetwood Mac's Danny Kirwan, plus Keef Hartley, Bob Brunning & Bob Hall. Tracks 9-14 feature Danny Kirwan.
