John Hiatt & the Nashville Queens / The Plant, Sausalito, CA April 4, 1996 KFOG-FM

John Hiatt & the Nashville Queens
The Plant
Sausalito, CA
recorded April 4, 1996
unknown generation

01. Wrote It Down And Burned It
02. Ethylene
03. Graduated
04. Shredding The Document
05. Perfectly Good Guitar
06. Walk On
07. Interview, plus "Sly and the Family Queens" riff
08. Only The Song Survives
09. Cry Love
10. Your Love Is My Rest
11. Drive South
12. I Wanna Be Sedated

I have a cassette of the original live broadcast.  The original transmission of the show dropped the feed from the Plant several times; KFOG covered by shifting to their usual playlist, and going back to the Plant when the link was recovered.  The original broadcast did NOT include the encore of the cover of the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated."  I never digitized my original tape because it dropped the broadcast...but even if it was complete, it would have missed the WONDERFUL cover of the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated."

This is NOT sourced from one of my master tapes.  As the show includes the (originally unbroadcast) encore, this likely comes from a later rebroadcast of the show.  Given that the original broadcast was marred by repeated drops of the live feed, it's not surprising KFOG rebroadcast the show.  While I don't know the generation, this is an excellent recording, and I recommend it to you.

Requiem For KFOG-FM

After years of being an easy listening station, KFOG-FM, converted to a rock format in 1982.  At first, they were just one of many formatted stations in the Bay Area, but by the late 80s, they made a grab for the brass ring; they wanted to be heir to the legacy of KSAN-FM, one of the first "free formatted" stations launched in the late 1960s.  While KFOG had a playlist, they made a regular commitment to broadcasting live concerts from local venues, plus "studio shows with a small audience," usually recorded at The Plant, in Sausalito (and later on at Fantasy Studios,  in Berkeley).  KFOG pioneered the "Adult Album Alternative" format.

Their on-air personalities, Morey, M. Dung, and Rosalie, became part of the local rock landscape, and their broadcasts of the Bay Area Music Awards featured jams you never would have expected, such as Metallica's Kirk Hammett jamming with Carlos Santana.

KFOG also put out an annual "Live From The Archives" CD, starting in mid-90s, with tracks from their various live broadcasts in the preceding year.  Early volumes of this are highly collectible, selling for stupid-money on EBay.

All that comes to an end this September, when KFOG-FM will be folded into KNBR, and became a "sports talk" station, becoming KNBR-FM 104.5.

They had a good run; times change.

So...let's raise a glass of whatever we're drinking to one of the GREAT SOURCES OF QUALITY LIVE MUSIC recordings over the last four decades; it is not likely we will see their equal again.

Here on Voodoo Wagon,  we have the following KFOG shows,  sourced from my master cassette tapes.  I usually used a high bias tape, so most of these sound great...
I think all of these links are still "live," if not, please let me know.  KFOG: requiescat in pace.

Armaggedon - self titled {1970} NOW BACK FROM THE DEAD

Not to be confused with the UK outfit, this German release from 1970 is an absolute belter of an album. Hard rock with definite progressive and psychedelic edges, the guitar of Frank Diez drives this one all the way.

Why didn't this group record more than just one album? Their self-titled album is a heavy progressive masterpiece with excellent, Hendrix-influenced guitar work and vocals by Frank Diez. Armaggedon was the start of his long and impressive career. Their album had six tracks, and two of them were cover versions. Most impressive was the 10-minute version of Jeff Beck Group's "Rice Pudding". This track had some of the greatest heavy guitar riffing to appear on a German record. Their version of Spooky Tooth's "Better By You, Better Than Me" was also competent enough. In addition, both Frank Diez and Manfred Galatik (electric piano, bass and vocals) wrote great songs, as typified by the tracks "People Talking" and "Open". Michael Nurnberg (bass, rhythm guitar) and Jurgen Lorenzen (drums) provided a strong backing. Armaggedon's album has rocketed in price during recent years, due to the ever increasing interest. However, demand for the group was poor way back in 1970, and Armaggedon soon broke up. Diez never played material with a similar energy again, his next step was to join the 'slightly-above-average' jazz-rockers Emergency.  He later played with Randy Pie, Karthago, Ihre Kinder and Atlantis.  Luckily the Armaggedon album was released on CD in 1991 with a sharp and clean digitally remastered sound (in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies).~CGR

Now with FIXED Link!!!

Track List:
1. 4:12 Round
2. 7:31 Open

6. 4:36 Better By You, Better Than Me

Frank Zappa and Jean Luc Ponty - Live Festival Hall, Melbourne 1973

Rescued from the bowels of the now dead FBSVIP...

Frank Zappa & Jean Luc Ponty - Live Festival Hall
Melbourne, AU.
June 29, 1973
Liberated Vinyl Bootleg @320

Ultra-Modern Stringbean (LP/CD)
Mudshark (CD)
Live in Melbourne (CD)
Tiny Nightmares (2 LP)

Festival Hall, Melbourne, 29-Jun-1973
Featured as record 1 (dark blue label) of The History & Collected Improvisations of Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention (re-issued on CD)
Re-issued as one version of Tiny Nightmares by Impossible Recordworks (IMP 1.13)
Re-issued with Zurkon Music as another version of Tiny Nightmares (2 LP) by Beacon Island Records, Australia (2S726)
Also issued on CD as Mudshark by Three Cool Cats (TCC 049)
Also issued on CD in Germany as Live in Melbourne (Q 10002), with the bar code Q 10002
Length: ~45 min
Sound quality: Audience B+
LP label: ZX 3651
CD label: RXZ Records 301

Musicians:
Frank Zappa, Jean-Luc Ponty, George Duke, Ian Underwood, Ruth Underwood, Bruce Fowler, Tom Fowler, Ralph Humphrey and Sal Marquez.

Set List:
1. Uncle Meat (Main Theme) / Uncle Meat Variations ["Excercise 4"?]
2. Dog Breath
3. Uncle Meat (Main Theme)
4. Montana
5. Fifty-Fifty [instrumental version, not listed]

6. Mudshark
7. Farther Oblivion [listed as "Father O'Blivion"]

The track list on the album is quite wrong; the above should be correct. Track 7 is NOT "Father O'Blivion" but "Farther Oblivion", an officially unreleased number including themes from "Cucamonga" and "The Adventures of Greggary Peccary" as well as the entire "Be-Bop Tango" theme. The Mudshark and Live in Melbourne CDs have another sequencing: they flip the vinyl sides around (and get the track order 6-7-1-2-3-4-5), and the cover track list on Live in Melbourne is half wrong. The Mudshark and Tiny Nightmares covers have five superimposed pictures of Zappa playing guitar (the same picture has also been used on the Shogun Records boots Brest and Thigh); Live in Melbourne has Zappa in funny glasses, making a face.
