The Beat Farmers - Live At The Rhythm Cafe 1992

*NOW WITH NEW LINKS

wacocrimatty asks for so little, yet gives so much. So this is for you my brother (I hope it's one you don't have) Hopefully this will tide you over while I look for "The Spring Valley Gig" I don't know why I have this in three parts, when I could have knocked it down to two, ah..I'm lazy. As a side note "The Boss" has left "The Adult Bookstore Motel" a complete mess...normally at the start of the month he has a cleaning crew come in and clean the place up. All I can figure is that he's out shooting off fireworks. Goddamnit I don't know how to do it but I'll get out my mop and Windex and see what I can do, I just hate having to clean up all those sticky booths. No Covers. Songs Are

Frank Zappa & Jean-Luc Ponty - Festival de Valbonne 1970

Frank Zappa & Jean-Luc Ponty
Festival de Valbonne
Valbonne, France
July 25th, 1970
speed corrected
Audience recording @flac

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the orig. seed was having bad speed fluctuations, especially in track 2 (jam 1), here's a speed corrected re-seed to urich's original. All other tracks had to undergo some slight corrections as well.

A big "Thanks!!" again to JJB the taper and to urich21 the orig.seeder of this rarity.

Enjoy !!

-- flambay (via zappateers.com - May 2006)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

orig.seeder's notes:

The Valbonne festival was organised by Claude Rousseau, who had organised the Bourget festival (near Paris) the previous March.

The programme, as announced in late June, was as follows :
July 23rd : Iron Butterfly, Warm Dust, Swegas & Moving Gelatine Plates
July 24th : Gong, Brigitte Fontaine, Amon Duul II & Red Noise
July 25th : Zappa/Ponty, King Harvest & Ame Son

It seemed like it was going to be a great Summer for lovers of rock music, with no less than three major festivals announced in the South of France for late July and early August : in addition to Valbonne, there was another one in Aix-en-Provence on August 1st-3rd, organised by trendy fashion designer Jean Bouquin, as well as the follow-up to the 1969 Amougies festival by Jean Karakos, in Biot, beginning on August 5th.

However, around mid July it all went wrong : all three festivals were banned by the authorities, who used the risk of forest fires as an excuse. In the event, they did go ahead, but in this pre-Internet age lack of reliable information ensured that attendance was well below expectations, and that the promoters lost a lot of money. Many bands weren't paid or refused to play, and in the case of Biot the event ended prematurely, degenerating into a riot.

The Zappa/Ponty jam was expected to be the highlight of Valbonne. However it didn't turn out quite as planned either. According to Ponty, Zappa was supposed to come with the new incarnation of the Mothers of Invention, but turned up on his own, Amougies-style ! A pick-up band had to be assembled at short notice, and the duo ended up sharing the stage with two noted French jazz players, drummer Aldo Romano and bassist Alby Cullaz.

As far as I know, this is the first time this performance has been heard since the event. Once again, we have the intrepid JJB to thank for preserving the moment for posterity. Amougies was the beginning of his taping exploits; Valbonne was the end - and what an end it was !

Set List: (w/timings after speed corr.):

1. tuning up (1:18)
2. jam 1 (15:42)
3. King Kong (16:59)
4. jam 2 (8:02) °°° cut/flaw @ 2:50
5. jam 3 (3:40)

Total time: 45.41 min

Frank Zappa - guitar
Jean-Luc Ponty - violin
Alby Cullaz - bass
Aldo Romano - drums

personal notes on similarities between jams and released song themes/harmonies:

Jam 1 <=> Foosh (J.L.Ponty-George Duke Quartet)
Jam 2&3 <=> Willie The Pimp
Jam 3(Coda) <=> unknown (as yet) folk song

Thanks to the Zappateers and archive.org!!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All!

Firesign Theatre - The Tale of the Giant Rat of Sumatra (1974)

Channeling Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Jules Verne (with a dash of Mark Twain among others), the Firesign Theatre spin a tail of action, intrigue and duplicity involving a sought-after new technology, a large furry rodent, a corporate patriarchy, corrupt politicians, inept lawmen, nefarious reprobates, buxom beauties and a seven percent solution. Will Hemlock Stones solve the mystery? The answer is elementary, my dear Flotsom!

Sherlock Holmes has long been a staple subject for detective stories. The humorous, and at times surreal, approach to the Holmes mythos taken by Phil Austin, Peter Bergman, David Ossman, and Philip Proctor is both a mockery and a sincere tribute to the Holmes character. If you can't imagine how it can be both, just listen 4 or 5 times and it will all make sense. ~bigreenserpent

1. Not Quite The Solution He Expected (8:38)
2. An Outrageously Disgusting Disguise (5:08)
3. Where There's Smoke, There's Work (5:39)
4. Where Did Jonas Go When The Lights Went Out? (7:07)
5. Pickels Down The Rat Hole (6:12)
6. The Electrician Exposes Himself! (9:06)

  HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL!!!

Graham Parker Live At The Ritz June 27th 1988

*Thanks to the original poster.

It occurs to me that it's getting harder and harder to come up with music that has not been posted hundred of times.  I mean I have tons of bootlegs on my external but I don't know who if anyone would be interested and besides, whenever I find something that might interest you, I do a Google search and find that it's on a bunch of other sites. I know everyone has different taste and I try to post things that I would download. Draftervoi, enoch, and The Boss do a great job of coming up with things that are exclusive to our site. But I'm not gonna let that dissuade me from continuing to post I still love it. So I'm just gonna keep on trying to find things that will keep you (our valued customers) coming back for more.  See Scans

The Cory Band With The Gwalia Singers - Stiff Records BUY 133 (1981)

The original recording of "Stop The Cavalry" by Jona Lewie was mainly an anti-war song, released in 1980 on Stiff Records.  The song hit #3 on the U.K. charts and #2 in Australia, but wasn't released in the United States.  In 1981, the Cory Band with the Gwalia Singers released a cover version (also on Stiff Records).

The Cory Band formed in 1884...they're one of the longest lasting bands in the world.  The Gwalia Singers came together in 1966.

The version of "Stop The Cavalry" by the Cory Band and the Gwalia Singers didn't chart.  The record was not released in the United States.  But a copy of the record made it's way to the Pacific Northwest, where it became a regional Christmas hit.

More about that can be found at: http://historysdumpster.blogspot.com/2015/11/stop-cavalry-cory-band-w-gwalia-singers.html

For the original single by Jona Lewie, check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HkJHApgKqw

The Internet says the master tapes were erased.  Here's my rip of a clean copy of the single. Flac files of .wavs, plus .mp3s at 320.  Also included are 300 dpi scans of the single cover (front and back) and also the disc labels.

Okay...so it's Thanksgiving, and my brother hands me a SAFEWAY shopping bag and says, "Hey, can you digitize this **** for me and get it back to me by Christmas?"  I say, "Wah...uh...yeah, of course I can!."  Stuffed inside the Safeway bag are an LP, and a 45.   One is a Second City LP  and the other an obscure edit of a Richard Nixon speech.  Welcome to my December......  So I'm spending my time, running comedy LPs into .wav files, as hey...he's my brother, and I'd be a jerk if I didn't help him out.  So...as long as I've digitized it, why not share it?  I was STUNNED that one of our readers cared about the Tanz der Youth single; I figured I was the only guy on the planet who might care about that record, forty years later...so anyway...here's some early '80s improv comedy.  I had to do this project because: family....but maybe someone else might find it of interest?

Tanz der Youth - I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry / Delay - Radarscope Records ADA 19

After leaving the Damned at the end of 1977, guitarist Brian James formed Tanz der Youth (German for "Dance of Youth.")  Other band members were Andy Colqhoun on bass guitar (formerly of punk band Warsaw Pakt, later join
ed the Pink Fairies and is still releasing music with that band), Alan Powell on drums (formerly of Chicken Shack, Vinegar Joe, and Hawkwind, and later (at the time) of San Francisco band Jo Allen And The Shapes who appeared on the 415 Music compilation), and Tony Moore on keyboards (an early member of Iron Maiden and later with Cutting Crew).

Brian James went on to achieve his greatest success with the Lords of the New Church.

Tanz der Youth also recorded a live broadcast for legendary British DJ John Peel which was recorded August 2, 1978 and first broadcast on August 9, 1978. The show was repeated August 25, 1978, and again on September 9, 1986 and featured "Why I Die," "Mistaken," "Delay" and "I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry."

Tanz der Youth does not show up on compilations, so here's their "one-off" single for Radarscope from 1978.  Digitized Dec. 2018, with 300 dpi scans of the cover and disc labels.  Flac and mp3s.

Westwood One In Concert #83-01
Airs 1/14 - 1/16 1983

No venues or cities were listed for the performance by the announcer.

However, in 2018, a reader named Bob W. commented,

"The David Lindley set was recorded October 30, 1982 at Keystone, Palo Alto, CA. The band was David Lindley, Bernie Larson, Jorge Calderon and Ian Wallace.

Bill DeBlonk used to have a David Lindley database online - DAVID LINDLEY TAPER'S ALMANAC . It was a great resource, gone now, but I copied a version dated, January 3, 2008. The Almanac was copyright 1997-2008 Bill T. DeBlonk. Bill is/was based in Chico, CA."

One of the fun things about these old syndicated radio shows is songs never released by the artist.  In the case of Tommy Tutone, there's a power-poppish cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," and on the David Lindley set, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Rattlesnake Shake."  (I've now discovered there's a live download of "Wild World" available at Amazon, released just a few years ago....but at the time, this live show was the only release of the Tutone version...)

In Advertising as Art, we've got Budweiser commercials by Leon Redbone and the Bus Boys.

The announcer was David Perry, who was a disc jockey on Southern California radio stations (KWST, 1975-76; KMET, 1976-82; KLOS, 1984; KHTZ (Texas), 1985; KMET, 1986-87; KLSX (Phoenix AZ), 1989-92).

Rosanne Cash - Westwood One Presents #89-37 - Bottom Line, NYC

Rosanne Cash
Westwood One Presents #89-37
for broadcast September 4, 1989
run out groove: L-89-37-1
run out groove: L-89-37-2

Another mystery to track down:

The announcer, Jim Duncan, says this was recorded at the Bottom Line, New York City, NY. The 1989 broadcast date of this syndicated radio show is not the date the show was recorded.

The setlist also matches the Live From Gilley's setlist for L 88-22 broadcast on May 23, 1988, so the show was definitely not recorded in 1989.  (Note that the Live From Gilley's shows were not always recorded at Gilley's).

The archive of Bottom Line shows at http://www.bottomlinecabaret.net/tline_index.html
does not list a Rosanne Cash show for 1988 or 1989.  It does list a show from November 24, 1987, so that is likely the source date of this show.

There was a bootleg CD named Rosanne Cash – At The Bottom Line on the Royal Sound Music label (RSM 006) which also says this was from 1988, but I say they're wrong.

Digitized directly from the syndicated radio disc Dec. 2018.
Flac files of .wavs.  Includes a 300 dpi scan of the cue sheet,
the affidavit, and a disc label.

Here are two bands that should have been more successful than they actually were...for different reasons.

Eddie & the Hot Rods were on the cusp of Punk Rock, there at the very start, but were essentially a Pub Rock band playing high-energy blues-based rock & roll.  They were unfairly left behind as the times moved on, and bands like the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Jam took the center-stage in the eyes of the British musical press.

One thing to note is the cover of Bruce Springsteen's "The Ties That Bind" in the set list.  This syndicated broadcast was on October 12, 1980...and Springsteen's "The River" wasn't released until October 17, 1980. The song is not on any of their albums at the time, although a studio version was recorded and eventually released in 1992 on "The Curse Of The Hot Rods," a collection of previously unreleased studio recordings. Did Springsteen pass the song along to the Rods before "The River" was released?  It seems likely.

The Fools were a solid New Wave band, but were undermined by the "novelty record" aspect of their comic cover of the Talking Heads "Psycho Killer," reimagined as a song about fast-food chicken meals. Their parody cover is fun but silly...and after you record a song that's on the Doctor Demento radio show, you're pigeon-holed as a novelty act. They soldiered on, and are still performing today, however.

Lesley Palmiter was an American radio disc jockey, appearing on stations in the American Northeast (Connecticut and Massachusetts). Lesley broadcast on WCOZ in 1975 along with George Taylor Morris, who has also appeared on prior shows I've digitized.  The Internet tells me that she's now working as a real estate agent.

Prince Featuring Madhouse Paisley Park Studio Rehearsals August 87

Well folks, I think it's time I give you an update on why I have been away so long. You see me and some old high school buddies recently got our old band back together. We have been hitting the Holiday Inn, school prom, Golden Corral circuit. If we have not yet been to your town, hold on cause we are coming. We've got an advertising campaign that can't miss. We've taken ads out on radio and T.V. The thing is we change our band name constantly. For instance tonight in Vaughn New Mexico we are billing ourselves as The Temptations now you may ask yourself how in the fuck can they get away with that? Well after consulting with our lawyers we've been assured we are not breaking any copyright laws. You see I happen to have a turtle-neck sweater that once belonged to David Ruffin. At a show many years ago David was on a crack binge when he came out on stage and started to undress. Before he could get his speedo off he was tossing his clothes out into the audience (Goddammit the old lady next to me got one of his Stacey Adams) An alert roadie whisked him off the stage but not before I wrestled away the black turtle-neck from some little kid. According to our lawyer as long as I wear the turtle-neck we can call ourselves The Temptations. Tomorrow in Moscow Idaho we are billing ourselves as AC/DC as our guitar player caught a guitar pick thrown into the crowd by Angus. And once again as long as our guitarist uses this pick we can't be sued. We will also be billing ourselves as The Rolling Stones seeing as how our drummer has a drumstick that he caught when Charlie threw it into the crowd. Our bass player has a pair of panties that were thrown onstage at an Elvis concert and The King proceeded to wipe the sweat off his brow with said panties then return them to the crowd to which our bass player was right place right time. The only problem when we bill ourselves as Elvis Presley is the bass player has to wear the panties on the outside of his leather pants (he hates that) So look for us shortly coming to your town. We have no original members of the band we are representing that night but we have something that they once owned or touched. Just like any of the other sham bands that own the rights to the group name but have no one from the original band THEY REPRESENT.  See scans

NOW WITH LINKS SMALLER THAN 80MB!

Hey, Voodoo Wagon gang, I had a comment from our friend Anonymous, who was kind enough to let me know that he (or she) had problems downloading files on MEGA that were larger than 80MB.  So...is this a problem for anyone else?

I have broken the files for this show into 75MB files to help him (or her) download the files....I'll also do the same for the other First Airborne Rock and Roll Division show (listed below).

And I'll also give you a TEASER of a future post!

I've found the COMPLETE BROADCAST of this Captured Live!, which was originally spread over two weeks back in 1984!  Now...I have to WORK on these two shows, removing clicks and pops, but VERY SOON we'll have the complete broadcast of this super-group!

UPDATED NOTES AS OF NOVEMBER 1, 2018:

Recording date is likely April 6, 7, or 8th, 1984 as I've found a copy of a local base newspaper, the "Hawaii Marine" dated April 4, 1984 that mentions that "a carnival featuring rides,
food, refreshments and the rock band "The First Airborne
Rock and Roll Division" should liven Fort DeRussy this weekend."

From what I've discovered, the First Airborne Rock and Roll Division played for three nights at Fort DeRussy Military Reservation,
which would be April 6, 7, or 8th, 1984. It's possible the show
is from any (or several) of those dates.

A copy of that newspaper page has been added to the file.  Note that several online sources list this show as "March 1984."

The band members of the First Airborne Rock and Roll Division on the 1984 tour were:

Cheap Trick:
Rick Neilson
Robin Zander
Bun E. Carlos

Kansas:
Phil Ehart
John Elefante

Richard Williams

Le Roux:
Leon Medica

Pablo Cruise:
David Jenkins
Cory Lerios
John Pierce

Doobie Brothers:
Patrick Simmons

(This set list is not the same as the one listed below...but any duplicated song titles are the same versions...Also, the post immediately below this one is the SAME SHOW I posted in 2015,  but updated with better file tagging, and with the new information I've learned about the show since 2015. This "greatest hits" show adds tracks by the Kansas and Pablo Cruise band members, but leaves out some of the Cheap Trick songs.  Eventually, I shall track down the original broadcast LPs of the original two part show, and combine all of this into a First Airborne Rock and Roll Division mega-post.  Stay tuned, Voodoo Wagon Beloved Audience!

And really, Jobe...check out the David Faux-ie track.   It's so awful that it's wonderful.   :)

Captured Live! produced radio shows starting in March 1982 to December 1984 for affiliated stations on the RKO Radio Network.  Distribution was usually on two or three LP sets, and Captured Live! produced hosted and unhosted versions.  A script was included for the stations that chose to use the unhosted version.   Over the years the full sets with both hosted/unhosted versions have often been split apart and sold as separate items.

As of June 18, 1984, the show changed to "hosted only," all shows after that date should not have an "unhosted" version.

I've also seen Captured Live! reel-to-reel tapes for sale, and they don't seem to have a corresponding LP version.

Most of the shows were broadcasts of current live concerts recorded for Captured Live!, but there was a Fleetwood Mac show consisting of their 1974 KSAN-FM studio broadcast from the Record Plant.

The show numbering scheme took the number of the show in sequence plus the last two digits of the year:  the first show of 1983 was 183, the second show was 283, etc.

The First Airborne Rock And Roll Division band came from an idea by Phil Ehart of Kansas for a series of USO (United Service Organizations Inc.) shows for U.S. military servicemen.  The version of the band touring in the SPRING of 1984 included members of Kansas, Cheap Trick, Pablo Cruise, Doobie Brothers and LeRoux.  They played shows at bases in Hawaii, Okinawa, Japan, the Philipines, Diego Garcia, Germany, and also did shows on aircraft carriers in the Indian Ocean.  Ehart put together different groups of stars for First Airborne USO tours in 1985 and 1986.

Captured Live! did a two part broadcast of the First Airborne Rock And Roll Division's appearance at Fort DeRussy Military Reservation in Honolulu, Hawaii.   The first syndicated broadcast date was on June 4, 1984 (show CL-1984, hosted and unhosted versions), and featured the Kansas/Pablo Cruise songs.  The second broadcast was June 11, 1984 (show CL-2084, hosted and unhosted versions) had the Patrick Simmons/Cheap Trick songs.  I've seen circulating versions of the show that attribute the syndicated date of the shows as the actual date of the concert, which I now think was in April of 1984.  There was also a "greatest hits" version of the show issued as Captured Live! CL-3384 (broadcast date of September 10, 1984) that featured songs from both shows.  This should be a "hosted" version only.

This version is digitized from the LPs of the HOSTED rebroadcast of the show on September 10, 1984 (I do not think there was an "unhosted version" as this is after the date Captured Live! switched to only hosted versions of their shows)

I've included a 300 dpi copy of the cue sheet, and a disc label, and a few news articles I found on the internet.

Oh...and JOBE!  You simply MUST check out the David Faux-ie commercial!!!

CL-3384 (broadcast date of September 10, 1984) that featured songs from both shows.  This should be a "hosted" version only.

This version is digitized from the LPs of the UNHOSTED version of the the second show (CL-2084, unhosted). So this is HALF the show. There are a few long spaces of the audience noise intended as a "bed" for the disk jockey to read the script.  I've included a 300 dpi copy of the script, the cue sheet, instructions, a letter to the Program Director, a disc label, and a few news articles I found on the internet.

I have now found a copy of the later "greatest hits" version of the show with a broadcast date of September 10, 1984, and I'll post that one, too.

David Bowie Live Roseland Ballroom 2002

Please note only the first disc was given to me.  I am working on getting the second disc, however. See scans but remember this only goes to song 17.

YOU'RE SUCH A WONDERFUL PERSON BUT YOU GOT PROBLEMS

David Bowie C'Est La Vie *NOW WITH NEW LINK

*NOW WITH NEW LINKS

I'm gonna get out of the music thing and put my time and energies into something I've always wanted to do, yep that's right time for me to become a geriatric doctor to rock and  rollers. First up I'm in deep negotiations with Mick Mars from Motley Crue to create a wheelchair that any guitarist can play onstage, without wheels. It operates on jet packs, so that instead of running around said stage (like a moron) you can go from your spot on stage, to say behind the drum kit by simply playing the wrong note. If you play enough wrong notes you can get to the bus station to get you to your next gig. I'm also consulting with many, many old time rockers management teams on a device where they have a polyethylene tube attached from the penis and rectum that runs from inside the pant leg to the closest available restroom. This avoids the nasty accidents many of our old time R&R heroes experience while playing a two hour show. We have had one problem with this though as one of our very famous artists mixed up the polyethylene tube with the chord to his wireless microphone. Let me just tell you this "Enter Sandman" does not sound the same when the vocalist is constantly spitting between words. What has been the hardest thing to figure out is our prototype "rocker." We're trying to figure out a way to make all of our old rock-stars fit into a fake skinny body with their vocal range intact from when they first started out in the "business" and perfecting an alternative to receding hairline.  Oh almost forgot... too many of our "stars" can no longer take drugs due to age limitations so I've consulted a Mister. Zimmerman on how to look and talk "stoned" while conducting interviews or while on stage or at any given awaken moment. So as you can see I've got my hands full, and I really don't have a lot of time for posting anymore. Anyway that's enough Bowie for a while. See Scans

IT'S NOT THE SIDE EFFECTS OF THE COCAINE
