And you thought we were done with Mellencamp?  This is the sixth time Westwood One recycled tracks from the 1997 Farm Aid show, with all songs repeated from earlier broadcasts,

On July 3, 2004 all of the 90 minute Westwood One shows (Superstar Concert, In Concert, In the Zone, High Voltage)....changed from 2CD 90 minute shows to 1CD 60 minute shows. So the set list is short, just five songs, and the rest of the show has a similarly abbreviated John Fogerty set from the same concert.

The cue sheet lists "Suzie Q" between "Green River" and "Centerfield," but it is not on the CD.
Host Jeff Gonzer retired in 2012, after 43 years in radio...in Los Angeles, Miami, and Boston and on the Westwood One and Dial Global networks.  He was HUGE in the Los Angeles market, on KMET from '76 to '86 in the morning slot.

As of July 4, 2004, the Westwood One Superstar Concert shows were cut down from a ninety minute show on two CDs to one hour on one Cd.  Show #05-07 is another grab bag of previously aired tracks sourced from 2002 and 2003, plus three new tracks from 2004.

The reduction in air time in 2005 also corresponds with the end of the King Biscuit Flower Hour.  Syndicated shows were in decline, fewer stations were carrying them. By 2007, the Westwood One cue sheets also have the note that the "files were available for download."  While the majority of the Westwood One shows were being sourced from previous years, this show is a good example of how new content continued to be released.

During the mid-80s, Westwood One print ads claimed the show was carried by 450 stations.  This gives us some idea of the number of copies pressed.  I don't know the number of shows in the 2000s, but the later years do not turn up on Ebay very often.

Also:  I am moving this comment from our reader, Rudolf Schmidt, into some posts to increase visibility:

"This seems like a good time to introduce my John Mellencamp live bootlegs archive:

Inspired by livepetty.com, I tried to create a site where the average joe looking for JM live recordings can find the best (IMO) versions without getting into all the minutiae we do here. Of course, most of my stuff is just draftervoi's stuff but I managed to add a few things. Hopefully, it will prevent a few people from paying to download the same recordings from greedy bootleggers. I remember reading a comment by someone who was tickled pink because he had just bought a copy of Mellencamp's 4 July 1992 concert on "audiophile vinyl".

21 Jeff Gonzer - Westwood One Superstar Concert Series 04-19 Outro
22 Jeff Gonzer - Westwood One Superstar Concert Series 04-19 Promo

On the introduction, Jeff Gonzer says, "At Farm Aid 2003 held in Columbus, Ohio, John took a page right out of Neil Young's book and featured music from his latest Trouble No More.  That album is Mellencamp's take on some vintage blues and folk songs.  And as with some Neil Young concerts of the past, many fans were left wanting to hear their favorites.  So with a little creative production,  we've combined his Farm Aid 2003 concert with his performance at Farm Aid 2002 to give you what you want."

What follows is three songs from 2002, three from 2003, two from 2002, three from 2003...then a song from 2001, not mentioned by Mr. Gonzer, and finally two songs from 2003.  Setlists.fm only lists five songs as played in 2003, and we've got eight on this set.  I checked Newspapers.com and found a clipping that reveals Mellencamp played nine songs, so we're only missing one song.

The clipping reveals the missing song as "To Washington," which (as per the Indianapolis Star's reporter) "characterized Bush as a leader who's quick to fight".  Gonzer didn't mention it, but they probably left that one on the cutting room floor to avoid political controversy.

The 2003 songs are noteworthy, as they're done in a different musical style than his "Arena Americana.".  As usual, he has excellent taste in cover songs, with Robert Johnson, Son House, Bob Dylan, and Howlin' Wolf in the set list.

You get:  300 dpit scans of the cue sheet, discs, and a copy of the Indianapolis Star's review of the 2003 show.

The Intro says "John's set at last year's Farm Aid....and now, recorded September 21st at the Post Gazette Pavilion in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania..."   The first segment of the show is sourced from the 2002 show.

J.J. Jackson introduces the second segment as "We're off to the Verizon Wireless in Noblesville, Indiana where John Mellencamp brought the crowd to their feet at Farm Aid 2001 when he tore into this song...," and the Outro says "recorded at Farm Aids 94, 2001 and 2002."

Based on the deejay talk, you'd think the show was sourced only from 1994, 2001 and 2002.  However, that's not correct, as the second segment has two songs from 1994, two from 1997, and two from 2001.

We also run into a minor editing variation on track 14, (R.O.C.K. In The USA).  This song showed up on 02-31 with about 30 seconds of solo guitar noodling before they kick into the song.  On the version here on 03-11, the guitar intro is not included.

You get:  300 dpi scans of the two CD discs and the cue sheet.  Flac files of wavs.  The commercials are NOT included, but the announcer is left intact.

(Note: The Post Gazette Pavilion is (was?) 25 miles west of Pittsburgh, and as with many of these venues, went through a series of name changes Coca-Cola Star Lake Amphitheater, Post-Gazette Pavilion, Niagara Pavilion, KeyBank Pavilion, and most recently S&T Bank Music Park.)

02-31 repeats the set list of 02-05, with sets sourced from Farm Aid shows in 1994, 1997, and 2001.  While host J.J. Jackson says the tracks are sourced from 1997 and 2001, one track (Paper In Fire) is from the 1994 Farm Aid concert.

There are some minor editing variations on a few songs, as compared to other broadcasts.

Love And Happiness (Tinley Park October 4, 1997) is on 98-06, 02-31, and 03-11. 98-06 has a vocal introduction, repeated on 02-31 but in a shorter edit, and 03-11 edits out this part entirely.

R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A. has a short lead guitar introduction on 02-31.  The intro is edited out when the song is repeated on 03-11.

Pink Houses is also on 98-06, 02-31, and 05-07, but only 02-31 has a short spoken "thank you for coming" speech by Mr. Mellencamp.

Authority Song merges into a cover of Bow Wow Wow Wow, a song originally by Was (Not Was) on 1983's Born To Laugh At Tornadoes LP, featuring guest vocals on the track by Mitch Ryder.  That year also saw Mellencamp producing Ryder's Never Kick A Sleeping Dog album.

Flac files of wavs.  Includes 300 dpi scans of the cue sheets and CD discs.

Today's Rock and Roll Geography Lesson:

The majority of the tracks were recorded at the Verizon Wireless Music Center.  Before that, the venue was named the Deer Creek Music Center.  After that, it became the Klipsch Music Center, the Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center, and most recently shortened it to Ruoff Music Center.  We sent in a bid offering them a nearly complete collection of Bazooka Joe gum wrappers to rename it the Voodoo Wagon Music Center, but have not heard back from them yet.

This is part one of a two part Farm Aid compilation sourced from Farm Aid IV, held on April 7, 1990 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Our friend, Anonymous, requested these two shows a few weeks back, and in a serendipitous coincidence, I had already digitized both shows for a future project.  Since he (or she) asked, I moved it to the top of the pile and got to work on it.

Bonnie Raitt duets with John Hiatt on Thing Called Love, and with Jackson Browne on World In Motion.

Guns N' Roses gave their first performance of Civil War, which was also the last performance of Steve Adler with the band.

Iggy Pop makes his only appearance on a Westwood One live concert show.

Farm Aid IV sold out 45,000 tickets in 90 minutes, featured 70 different artists appearing over a 13 hour event.  The show was broadcast live on the Nashville Network. A two hour highlight show aired on CBS.

The Indianapolis Star newspaper reported, "Guns N’ Roses was flying high as the hottest band in the world — but their abysmal performance at Farm Aid IV lead to the dismissal of drug-addled drummer Steven Adler that night and the eventual dismantling of the band.

The night was anchored by heavy-hitters Garth Brooks, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, John Mellencamp and an unscheduled stop by Elton John, who was in town visiting Ryan White at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and left his hospital bedside to join Farm Aid IV. “This one’s for Ryan,” John said before he launched into “Candle in the Wind.” White died the following day of complications from AIDS at the age of 18."

Westwood One repeated the Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, John Cougar Mellencamp, Elton John, and Guns N' Roses tracks on Westwood One Superstar Concert Series #92-21, issued on CD and broadcast on May 23-24, 1992.  Discogs says the announcer incorrectly says the show's from Dallas.

Note that WW1 chose to repeat the "abysmal" Guns N' Roses performance...so was it really as bad as the Indianapolis Star said it was?

On the commercials, we have Martin Mull promoting TGI Fridays in part one, and Al Franken doing uncredited work on a Trident commercials in part two.  Westwood One airs a series of promotions for an upcoming satellite broadcast of the 1990 Knebworth charity concert with short comments from Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Kurt Smith (Tears For Fears).

Our pal Steve Downes is back once again to handle the announcing duties.

Flac files of wavs.  300 dpi scans of the LP disc labels.  I do not have the cue sheets for this set, but included terrible, blurry, low resolution copies that are up on Discogs.  Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï says "Howdy" to all of you and hopes you enjoy this digitization.

Yeah.  MellenFest.  You knew it wasn't over, the show must go on!

As I recently posted a Don Henley show, this Farm Aid compilation provides a nice segue from Don Henley through Neil Young and back into Our Favorite Hoosier: John Mellencamp.  I want to point out that Neil's version of All Along The Watchtower is a wondeful performance.

The Mellencamp set is drawn exclusively from Farm Aid '96 at the Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, South Carolina on October 12, 1996.  Four of the songs were repeated on 98-06, and three on 99-36.
Pink Houses is presented in an epic 8 minute long version as the concert finale.  All in all, a good set for this week's latest installment of MellenStock!

You get:  The cue sheet!  Scans of both discs!  A scan of the Westwood One CD sleeve!  And a litttle Excel file documenting what I think I know about Westwood One's Mellencamp history...

I originally embarked on the Mellenfest project in the summer of 2021 but ran into a roadblock when I tried to extract #99-36.  By mid 1999, Westwood One switched from factory pressed silver CDs to CD-Rs.  The dye layer on many CD-Rs is not stable and degrades over time.  The second disc of my copy of #99-36 will no longer extract files correctly.  I tried extracting it with three different drives, but it was unusable.  I bought a brand new up-to-date drive in the hopes that it might work but it made no difference.  So I was stuck.  This was July 2021...and it brought my Mellenfest project to a screeching halt.  I had to wait until February 2022 before a copy of 98-06 turned up on Ebay.   98-06 is the same show as 99-36...but with one additional track: Check It Out, which was dropped from the track list on 99-36.  So...things turned out for the best, and I could move ahead with the project.

With this show, we start running into "variations" in the songs.  Westwood One often repeated tracks on future shows, but edited tracks differently than on the original syndication.  On this show, we have "Small Town" with a spoken introduction, and "Love and Happiness" with an a capella vocal introduction.  Future rebroadcasts of these songs were shorter edits, leaving out or shortening the introduction.

Jack & Diane gets a rap break middle section that's an interesting contrast with the country fiddle.

Flac files of wavs.  Comes with 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, certificate of performance, and CD discs.

Also:  I am moving this comment from our reader, Rudolf Schmidt, into posts to increase visibility:

There were two WW1 Mellencamp shows in 1996.  The 1994 Tinley Park show was repeated a second time as #96-46 at the end of the year.
This show was sourced from Mellencamp's set at Farm Aid 10.  Farm Aid sets are shorter than regular concerts, so Westwood One didn't have enough songs to fill up their full 90 minutes.  To make up thetime, they added four songs at the end from the 1994 Tinley Park show.  While WW1 sometimes edited songs (especially introductions...) these four tracks are identical to the prior broadcast.
Two songs from this 1995 Farm Aid show (Paper In Fire, Wild Night) were repeated on #97-06 and #98-06 in identical mixes and edits.

The show is hosted by the fabulous Tawn Mastry.  Brought to us by the defunct automobile brand...Plymouth.

A sharp-eyed reader noticed that our Mellenpalooza somehow missed the tracks that had been issued by Westwood One on multi-artist "Farm Aid" shows, so it was back to the drawing board for another revision.

I had already posted the WW1 Superstar Concert #92-45 several years back, and this is the same set of files, but retagged.

This show is the same as Westwood One Superstar Concert 92-19, with the exception of the Arc Angels track, which is dropped on 92-19 and replaced with two Joe Walsh tracks.

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars in Concert 09-22

This is the beginning of a Neil Young MEGABLAST.  I have a big stack of radio shows and I'm going to chapter them and upload them to the Internet.  Westwood One repeated many shows, and I've included a spreadsheet that documents the overlaps between the shows.

What this means, practically...is that you'll be downloading many of the same tracks, several times, as the WW1 shows re-ordered tracks from several shows, over and over.  I've put a spreadsheet into the download, which documents what I think I know about the shows...but I don't guarantee that it's 100% accurate!   If you find an error, please shout it out!

This is Neil Young's full set at Farm Aid 2008; unlike the other shows from the 2000's, this doesn't have a few cuts spliced in from other years.  It's notable for Young's cover of the Beatles "A Day In The Life."  This is edited directly from the original disc.  I've included a 300 dpi scan of the cue sheet and the disc.
