Jimi Hendrix-Villanova Junction

Not much to say about this, I always thought this video (below) probably summed up the last few months of Mr. Hendrix's career, with all the bullshit he had to put up with, all the takers, and in just a few short weeks after this Woodstock video he would play the infamous Isle Of Feharm show where he was booed. There are a lot of strange things in this world, but Jimi getting booed has got to be one of the strangest. See scans, my rip

Moody Blues - Superstars In Concert #93-37 - Apollo Theatre 1986

12. Question
13. Nights In White Satin
14. Outro - Jim Ellis

Both announcer Jim Ellis and the cue sheet date the Oxford Apollo show as 1987.  They're wrong.  This concert was not recorded in 1987, but on December 3, 1986.

There's also a BBC Transcription Services "BBC In Concert #407" LP, sourced from the same show.  That was distributed for broadcast in 1987; perhaps that's the source of the error.

In Concert #407 has two tracks added, "It May Be A Fire" and "New Horizons," and drops "Veteran Cosmic Rocker," "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock and Roll Band), "Isn't Life Strange," and "Question."

A silver CD bootleg of the Westwood One tracks was released in Europe in the mid-1990s under the title "VCR" (short for Veteran Cosmic Rocker, not Video Cassette Recorder) on the HallMark label as HallMark ‎– HM 024.

Westwood One repeated tracks from Oxford 1986 as part of a "compilation" show, combined with tracks from San Diego 1994 on Superstars In Concert #'s 94-47, 95-31, 96-25, 97-23, 02-39, 04-09, 06-09, 07-30, and 09-10.  These shows dropped several tracks as compared to this broadcast, which was never repeated with the full twelve tracks included here.

Ray Thomas's introduction to "Veteran Cosmic Rocker" says they're about to play the three part suite that ends the Long Distance Voyager album: "Painted Smile," the poem "Reflective Smile," and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker."  The first two are missing, edited out, and only "Veteran Cosmic Rocker" is present.

300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and CDs.  Flac files of wavs.  Sourced directly from the Westwood One discs. Commercials have been edited out.

* Beacon Theatre, New York May 7, 1976
** Hammersmith Odeon, London December 15, 1976
*** Bullring By The Sea, Tijuana March 21 or 22, 1992

As is often the case, we've a few musical mysteries to solve.  This one isn't so much a mystery as a series of errors, but hey, me n' Scooby Doo will take what we can get these days.  As I'm no expert when it comes to Santana, please feel free to toss in your dos centavos in the comments section when I get something wrong.

In Concert #93-16 is a compilation of tracks from three different shows. First up are two tracks from New York City's Beacon Theatre, recorded on May 7, 1976.  No problems there.

The second segment is announced as being from "1977's concert at the Hammersmith Odeon." A quick check of the Almighty Internet shows there was no Santana concert at that venue in 1977...but there was a show there on December 15, 1976.  There was a London show in 1977 at the Crystal Palace Bowl. So...is the date wrong, or the venue?  I'm going with wrong date.

The second problem is the cue sheet lists the songs as "Oye Como Va" followed by "Maria Caracoles." That's definitely "Oye Como Va," but song segues into what I believe to be a cover of Joe Cuba's "El Pito (I'll Never Go Back To Georgia)" before returning to "Oye Como Va."  The next song (I think) is "Europa."  No "Maria Caricoles" that I can hear at all.  Give it a listen and let me know if I'm missing anything.

The rest of the show is from Tijuana.  No mysteries here, just a minor spelling problem on the cue sheet with "aqua" instead of "agua."

The cue sheet was sliced up by a former owner so that they could stuff it into a CD case.

The Tijuana tracks were also broadcast by Westwood One on a Superstars In Concert Show #92-25, with several additional tracks from the show added.

You get 300 dpi scans of the mutilated cue sheet and the discs.  Flac files of wavs.

Gang Of Four - Live Toronto 1983

Back From The Dead...
Originally posted November 17, 2009

Gang Of Four - Toronto Concert Hall
October 1983
Toronto, Canada
FM Source @320

Formed in 1977 by Leeds University students Jon King (vocals), Andy Gill (guitar), Dave Allen (bass), and Hugo Burnham (drums), Gang of Four (along with the Fall, Mekons, and Liliput) produced some of the most exhilarating and lasting music of the early English post-punk era of 1978-1983. Fueled by the fury of punk rock and radical political theory, Gang of Four successfully welded the two in an inspired display of polemics and music that addressed the vagaries of life in the modern world (including love and romance) as matters of political inquiry. Despite the fact that this sounds rife with the potential for being long on rhetoric and short on groove, such was not the case. What made Gang of Four's polemical clang'n'roll so compelling was that it worked as harsh, bracing, and ultimately liberating rock & roll. With Allen and Burnham combining as a formidable and frequently very funky rhythm section, Gill didn't play guitar as much as emit thick wads of semi-tuneful distortion, while King "sang" in a dry, declamatory fashion similar to that of the Fall's Mark E. Smith. The rhythms were stripped down and jagged; at times Gill would dispense with guitar solos entirely and "play" non-solos, which were (surprise!) silence. Song titles sounded like the titles of radical political essays: "At Home He's a Tourist," "Damaged Goods," "It's Her Factory," "Love Like Anthrax," "To Hell With Poverty," all of it openly challenging the audience's preconceived notions about rock music, performance, the cult of celebrity, and the nature of politics. And in doing so, GOF conveyed rage, confusion, and loss of identity as well as any band of its time.

After three consecutive sensational albums, as well as a handful of EPs and singles, Allen left in 1982 to form the more danceable and less overtly political Shriekback, while Gill, King, and Burnham recorded the misguided "radical soul/R&B" record Hard with veteran American producers Ron and Howard Albert (who'd previously worked with Stephen Stills' Manassas and Firefall). A near total disaster, Hard signalled that the end was nigh. Gill and King, who by this point had final say-so on the band's musical and political direction, sacked Burnham, and the now "Gang of Two" released a so-so live album (At the Palace) and called it quits in 1984. But legends die hard, and Gang of Four experienced a mini-renaissance in the early '90s with the release of two excellent collections (A Brief History of the Twentieth Century and The Peel Sessions Album). King and Gill put together a new Gang of Four and released the tepid but not disgraceful Mall in 1991. Another reunion, from 1995, yielded Shrinkwrapped. Three years later, a double-disc compilation -- 100 Flowers Bloom -- surfaced on Rhino, and the original lineup reconvened in 2004 to tour extensively and release 2005's Return the Gift, featuring re-recordings of their early material. They have always remained, to the ears of those opened wide by punk rock, an extremely important band.
