Buster Poindexter - Bimbo's, S.F., Jan. 11, 1988, KFOG-FM

When his promising post-New York Dolls solo career slowed down in the mid-1980s, David Johansen reinvented himself as the tuxedo-clad lounge singer Buster Poindexter.   Musically, this show is a mix of jazz, calypso, and R&B.  It's also notable for Johansen's (or Poindexter's...) ability as a raconteur.  There are three extended comic stories, and he engages closely with the audience as a jovial-but-cynical Master of Ceremonies.

A note on the venue:  Bill Graham's Wolfgang's night club was destroyed in a fire in July of '87. Graham kept the club name alive with a series of "Wolfgang's Road Shows" at the Kennel Club, Bimbo's, the Galleria, and City Nights. Wolfgang's had been San Francisco's premier night club for about four years.

Hiatt opening for Robert Cray again.  Don't mix this up with the 1987 show I posted earlier this year, it's a different broadcast.  It's a solid set, but short.  On the other hand with a short set, the band really cooks all the way through.

Phil Collins, Warner Theatre, Washington D.C. Captured Live! pre-FM

Phil Collins
CAPTURED LIVE! CL 783
Hosted by Perry Stone
For broadcast: Week of June 27, 1983.
3 LP set, 5 sided, 6th side is blank.

Recorded at the Warner Theatre,

Washington D.C.
Recorded on Feb. 20, 1983
on the last night of the "Hello, I Must Be Going" World Tour.

NOTES: There is another Phil Collins Captured Live! show, numbered CL 1684,
that may be a rebroadcast of these tracks. That show was broadcast
on May 14, 1984 and is supposedly sourced from the Warner Theatre, too...

Total time for this is over 80 minutes, so it won't fit on a single CD.

I digitized this from a very clean copy of the original LPs. I spent about two weeks of intense listening to it, removing all the clicks and pops that I could find in Audacity. Included are 300 dpi scans of the cue sheets and one of the disc labels. Note that I spelled "theatre" as "theater" in the .TXT file, but the Internet tells me it's "theatre."

01. CL 783 Intro - Perry Stone
02. I Don't Care Anymore
03. I Cannot Believe It's True

As part of my exploration of syndicated radio shows, I ran across a syndicated show by Billy "Crash" Craddock. Craddock had a minor American Top 20 radio hit with the lascivious "Rub It In" in 1974. To give you an idea of how broken the American radio audience was at that time, he was known as "Mr. County Rock" to the C&W audience at the time, but his "rock" connection is mainly that he has a strong appreciation of 1950's Rock and Roll, which shows in his covers of Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, and Elvis Presley. Which is not bad, but these days wouldn't count as "rock' very much. And your average rock fan would be thinking Eagles or Poco if they heard "country rock" at the time.

For a large part of this show, he's channeling the big emotional Elvis Presley ballad style. While this isn't personally my style of music, Craddock seems like a decent sort and you may find this of interest.

Anyway... at the very least, this is unusual for Voodoo Wagon! We don't do a lot of Country & Western!

The Velvet Underground - Amsterdam 1993

From the Son O' FBS U-Hual...

Link FIXED!

The Velvet Underground - Live Paradiso
 Amsterdam, Netherlands
June 8, 1993
Soundboard-FM Source (?) @320

The Reed–Cale–Morrison–Tucker lineup officially reunited as "The Velvet Underground" in 1992, commencing activities with a European tour beginning in Edinburgh on June 1, 1993, and featuring a performance at Glastonbury which garnered an NME front cover. Cale sang most of the songs Nico had originally performed. The band's opening act was Luna. As well as headlining, the Velvets performed as supporting act for five dates of U2’s Zoo TV Tour.

Given the success of The Velvet Underground's European reunion tour, a series of US tour dates were proposed, as was an MTV Unplugged broadcast, and possibly even some new studio recordings. However, before any of this could come to fruition, Cale and Reed fell out again, breaking up the band once more.

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars In Concert CO90-14

Neil Young
(with Frank Sampedro and Ben Keith on several tracks)
Westwood One Superstars In Concert CO90-14
For broadcast the weekend of 6/30-7/1, 1990
(Same set list as show #90-06)

Attributed to Jones Beach in the credits, but five of the songs are recorded elsewhere.
I cross referenced this with the Jones Beach set list at http://www.sugarmtn.org/,
and I've marked the songs that weren't played at Jones Beach.

All of these tracks are attributed to a variety of European shows on the "Old Gringo" bootleg...but very clearly identified here as being from Jones Beach.  I don't know  if the songs are actually from Jones Beach, or from Europe...does anyone out there know?

These songs are the same tracks as on the second disc of the "Old Gringo" bootleg, but the version of "Ohio" included here has a long spoken introduction that's not on that bootleg.

I've included a scan of the disc label.  Unfortunately, there was no cue sheet included with this one....

Years of non-stop touring have honed his assault to a fine edge; his wide-eyed throw downs in the First Church of Ultimate Fanaticism routinely lead giddy followers to a fiery baptism.
Scott H. Biram won’t die. On May 11th, 2003, one month after being hit head-on by an 18-wheeler at 75 MPH, he took the stage at The Continental Club in Austin, TX in a wheel chair – I.V. still dangling from his arm. With 2 broken legs, a broken foot, a broken arm and 1 foot less of his lower intestine, Biram unleashed his trademark musical wrath.
When Scott H. Biram took the stage at his 2004 SXSW festival showcase right after Kris Kristofferson he was quoted as growling “They said that was a hard act to follow….I’m a hard act to follow motherfuckers!!” The stunned crowd looked on.

Velvet Underground - Retinal Circus (Fake) 1968

Velvet Underground - Live Retinal Circus 1969
Soundboard @320

*Original Notes*
The Retinal Circus was a venue in Vancouver, B.C. that hosted concerts by the likes of Cream,The Byrds, et al. The Velvet Underground played there several times and were well liked there. The last time they played there would have been at the end of their '69 tour. That said, there is speculation that this recording comes from The Eagle Theater in Seattle. The Eagle had its own in-house recording system and recorded most shows there for potential radio broadcasts. The Velvets would have shared the bill with one or two other big acts, and played for a larger audience than usual. Most of the original Eagle Theater reels were bought by a collector in the mid 1970's and have only begun to circulate in recent years.
The source for this is a Maxell XL II cassette made from a large 15ips reel. The cassette is at least 15 years old but has held up pretty well. It is not known if this show was ever broadcast.

John Hiatt - The Warfield, S.F., CA Sept. 18, 1987 KFOG-FM

Earlier this year I posted a 1987 Robert Cray show and mentioned that it had been a double-bill broadcast...and we had a C-box request for the Hiatt portion.  So...we aim to please, so here it is.  It's short, but as is often the case with a short set from the opening act, Hiatt and band are on fire.

I should mention that I have the Hiatt show from 1989 at the Warfield, too, as well as a 1994 broadcast from Slim's.  Are you interested in those, too?

What's missing...

Okay...here's what ISN'T in the Neil Young listed below.:
WW1 87-02  (same as 87-14...)
That's available at: http://www.guitars101.com/forums/f145/neil-young-in-conert-prefm-flac-122976.html
CO-90-14 (same as 91-06)...that's available on the Old Gringo bootleg
but I'll be posting a version that I digitized within a few weeks.
CO90-09, a Various Artists compilation with two Neil tracks...I don't have this...but the two tracks are repeated on 95-29, so we're probably good there....
92-19 or 92-45...another Various Artists comp...I have this one and will get it up soon
94-30 another Various Artists comp...I don't have this one
96-04 this one's all Neil, but I've never seen a copy for sale at reasonable price.

So...there you go, eleven WW1 shows, with two more to come and links to another.

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars In Concert 04-15

This show has five songs from the 2002 Farm Aid show and six from the 2003 Farm Aid show. This one is heavy on the overlaps with several other Westwood One Shows. The 2002 songs are repeats from #03-03, and are aired later on #05-09. The 2003 show songs are repeated again on #07-08 and on #08-30. The last three songs (Rocking In The Free World, Home Grown, and Be The Rain) are unique to this show.

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars In Concert 05-09

More Neil Young...this time from Farm Aid 2004 (with a bit of filler from 2002).  Both of these are Neil solo.  Of note is a very nice piano version of Buffalo Springfield's "On The Way Home."  Most live versions of that song are with a guitar accompaniment.  I have included 300 dpi scans of the original disc and the cue sheet.

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars in Concert #07-08

Westwood One’s Superstar Concert series was reduced to a single hour on July 3, 2004. After editing out the commercials, this leaves a little over 45 minutes of music.

Here’s show #07-08 from 2007, which contains partial sets from Neil Young’s Farm Aid shows in 2003 and 2006.

The 2006 Farm Aid show is up first, and has four out of the six songs he played. Backing up Neil is the Prairie Wind Band. This band only played thirteen shows with him between 2005 and 2006, and that total includes several short television spots. The Prairie Wind Band plays in a loose country style, with a horn section making an occasional appearance on a few songs.

Next up are three out of the six songs Neil played at the 2003 Farm Aid show. This set is with Crazy Horse and Neil’s in full “Godfather of Grunge” mode, stretching “Down By The River” out to twelve minutes.

I’ve included 300 dpi scans of the disc and the cue sheet.

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars In Concert 08-30

This is Neil Young's full set at Farm Aid 2008; unlike the other shows from the 2000's, this doesn't have a few cuts spliced in from other years.  It's notable for Young's cover of the Beatles "A Day In The Life."  This is edited directly from the original disc.  I've included a 300 dpi scan of the cue sheet and the disc.

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars in Concert 09-22

This is the beginning of a Neil Young MEGABLAST.  I have a big stack of radio shows and I'm going to chapter them and upload them to the Internet.  Westwood One repeated many shows, and I've included a spreadsheet that documents the overlaps between the shows.

What this means, practically...is that you'll be downloading many of the same tracks, several times, as the WW1 shows re-ordered tracks from several shows, over and over.  I've put a spreadsheet into the download, which documents what I think I know about the shows...but I don't guarantee that it's 100% accurate!   If you find an error, please shout it out!

The Black Angels' psychedelically induced rock evokes the spirit of the 1960's while awakening the heavy droning rhythms inspired by The Velvet Underground. Los Lobos / The Romantics - WW1 In Concert 85-4

Los Lobos
Westwood One In Concert #85-4
Airs 2/22 - 2/24 (1985)

NOTE: The cue sheet has a typo in the Show Number in the upper right hand corner, listing it as 85-5.
The number on the discs is 85-4, as is the other number on the cue sheet.
At that time, In Concert was broadcast every other week.  After checking a 1985 calendar, my conclusion is that this is 85-4.

The Los Lobos Set Lists website shows a Westwood One "Sunday Night Concert" with a different set list, which includes the following songs not on this version:

Our Last Night

Farmer John
Let's Say Goodnight

There is another Westwood One In Concert from 1985, IC 85-14 (the second band is the Payolas). It may be that the second 1985 show was also from Biddy Mulligan's, but with a slightly different set list.
