More cassettes from my box of tapes I got in trade years and years and years ago.

I usually like to feather in these tapes because they're not master copies; as mentioned they're several generations down the line and not up to my exacting standards.  Plus, I want to leave days open for the other authors to put up their posts, too.

However, we had a special request from a member of Our Beloved Voodoo Wagon Audience, one JPB in DC, who writes, "Any chance you have the November 1988 show at the Bayou, broadcast on WHFS? I recall it being a great show (I was there for both sets), with Clive Gregson and Christine Collister doing excellent opening sets."

Ah, it's Sunday morning and time to dip into ĐR̃äⒻṬëŕṽöï's box of Richard Thompson tapes.  Members of Our Beloved V-W audience will recall these are multi-generation cassette tapes of unknown provenance, with a bit of hiss.  Back in the olden times, we ran classified ads in Goldmine magazine to connect with other collectors of live radio shows.  You copied the cassettes in real time, put them in padded mailers, stood in line at the post office, and then waited and hoped you'd get cassettes back from the person on the other side of the trade.

On this cassette, Thompson is in fine form, and the sound is pretty good, although with a bit too much echoey reverb for my taste.

Studio KAFE was a full-service restaurant and bar featuring live music and comedy acts.  They also had a radio booth, broadcasting on a local cable radio station (that is, you couldn't get it on your car radio). It was an interesting idea but didn't last: Studio KAFE was open from April 1987 to October 1992.  

According to the newspaper ad, Thompson played two sets.  I don't know if this is the early or late show.  There were two audience recordings from the other set added at the end of the tape.

In this case, it's another forty year old cassette tape that Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï got in trade back in the days when we ran ads in Goldmine swapping recordings with other collectors around the world!  

This one is in pretty good shape, not much hiss, but it is down the road several generations from the master.

I tossed in some press coverage of the real-world Killerman Gold Posse, and also a few items about Al Bowlly, including a September 2, 1941 notice that ""Al" Bowlly, popular English singer and dance orchestra conductor, was killed in a Nazi raid on London early in the summer."

News moved more slowly back then.  Wiki says "On 16 April 1941, Bowlly and Mesene had given a performance at the Rex Cinema in Oxford Street, High Wycombe. Both were offered an overnight stay in town, but Bowlly took the last train home to his flat at 32 Duke Street, Duke's Court, St James, London. He was killed by a Luftwaffe parachute mine that detonated outside his flat at 3:10 a.m. His body appeared unmarked. Although the explosion had not disfigured him, it had blown his bedroom door off its hinges, and the impact against his head was fatal. He was buried with other bombing victims in a mass grave at Hanwell Cemetery, Uxbridge Road, Hanwell, where his name is given as Albert Alex Bowlly."

Mr. Bowlly died in the Blitz on April 16, 1941.  The Oakland Tribune in Oakland, California, mentioned his death the next day on the 17th.  However, it didn't appear in the North Adams Transcript in Massachusetts until September 2, 1941.

This is another multi-generation tape that I got back in the 1980s/1990s when I was trading cassette tapes through the mail.  While it's a few generations down the line from a master, it's a decent listen without ridiculous amounts of hiss.

Thompson mentions "the Buffalo Folk Festival" which is confirmed by a mention in the Buffalo News of April 10, 1987. The print ad proves it was the "15th Annual Buffalo Folk Festival."

I've tossed in a few vintage articles about the actual Killerman Gold Posse, who had been robbing people on the London subway ("the Underground," I believe they call it...). 18 year old criminals who would now be 56 years old here in 2025.

The guitar is low in the mix and the vocals are prominent for the first few songs.

Another multi-generation WXRT-FM tape that I got in trade back in the 1980s.  Good show, from one of WXRT's Sunday night rebroadcasts.  Sometimes they edited the show down from a longer original show, so there's a possibility that there's a longer version of this out there.

Back when we traded tapes through the mail, we would often end up with space for a few extra songs.  Most traders would add in a few tracks to fill up the blank space.  On this show, the trader added two outtakes of unknown date.  What with all the releases of bonus tracks over the years, these may have been released by now.

I've found press coverage confirming the date of the show, and it's in the Artwork folder.

Okay, Voodoo Gang! When I started posting tapes back in 2011 (thanks to SilentWay graciously extending an invitation to me, a yappy commentator on the blog that he'd never met...), I started out by posting master copies of cassettes I'd recorded off the local radio.  I was reluctant to share tape I'd got in trade as they were several generations down the road from a master tape.  I figured someone, somewhere, had a better copy, so why should I be so presumptuous as to share my noisy trash?

At the same time, as a collector...I pursued low generation tapes.  I looked for trade lists and traded for masters, or first generation copies.  Not always, of course, and I traded for a lot of tapes that were of unknown generation.

So here's an unknown generation tape, that I marked on my list as an "A" for trade. I'm gonna guess I this is a 1st gen tape, as it sounds great.  Somewhere out there, there's a lower generation, but the odds of finding it in 2025 grow dimmer every day.

The Edward Haber mentioned on Track 22 produced and recorded several albums for Mr. Thompson over the years, including 1993's "Watching The Dark" compilation.

Another tape discovered down in Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï's basement.  I got this in trade, and it's several generations down the road from the master.  There's hiss, but not so much as to ruin it.

I found an entertainment listing in the Chicago Tribune that confirms the date of the show.  This was from a later rebroadcast on WXRT's Sunday Night "Unconcert."

These rebroadcasts are often edited down from a longer original radio broadcast...so there may be a longer original concert.

 The Pretenders show is friggin' useless, as it's been released, and the only reason I'm posting it is to document it as a radio show that existed.  In short, it's here for the commercials and the announcements; go buy the 3-cd version of Pretenders II if you want to hear the concert.  I'm feeling guilty for subjecting Our Beloved Audience to it, as this sort of documentation is a bit crazy. Does anyone actually CARE about a 44 year old radio show when you can buy the full concert?

Another tape that I got in trade.  Unknown generation...but it's low, not much in the way of hiss.

The date of the show is confirmed by a newspaper clipping (included).

The last song ("Great Balls of Fire") is slowly faded out, then cuts off before the fade is complete.  

I've checked set lists I found on the Intertoobs, and "Great Balls" was the last song, so we're not missing anything else after it.

There were two sets at Tut's that night, and there's supposedly also an early set that was also broadcast by WXRT-FM.

Rock and Roll Geography
As you know, I run searches to find faint footprints from the past are out there on the Internet.  Searches for common names like "Richard Thompson" turn up a lot of results; he was married in Plano, TX, he's on the Memorial Hospital board, his car hit a tree...all of them not OUR Richard Thompson.

Searches for "Tut's" are problematic as the Optical Character Recognition programs have trouble with blurry scans and yellowing newsprint, returning results for the abbreviation "Tues".

 I tried looking for the address of Tut's at 959 W. Belmont, and looked on Google Maps...and was gobsmacked to recognize the building.  I've never been to Chicago but hey, that's now Blaze Pizza, and that used to be the Quiet Knight club that turned up on our Randy Newman and Bob Marley shows already posted here.  While I didn't find anything with those searches, I did turn up a review from a few days prior. It's from across the state line in Wisconsin and had a list of band members.

**Taper Notes**

This is the first RT show we taped on DAT.
We got 1 channel off the SBD and set up a Shure SM57 hanging out the soundbooth window for the other channel.
We ran them into my little Boss mixer and then into the Sony D3 DAT

Source- SBD and Sennheiser 421> Boss mixer> Sony D3 DAT> CD> EAC> Soundforge 7.0> CDWave> FLAC

For this upload I remixed it this way:
Removed the first .027 seconds from the start of the Shure ch to get it in sync with the SBD ch.
Remixed- left is 75% sbd w/ 25% Shure, right is 90% sbd w/ 10% Shure.
This preserved the direct sound of the SBD while adding some room ambience and a touch of stereo effect to what was two mono channels.

I've given this one out over the years, but even if you have it already maybe you will enjoy my remix.

Richard Thompson - Sausalito Arts Festival 1994

One hour and forty minutes of Richard Thompson from a mid 90s radio broadcast. If you don't know him, he's an amazingly fast-picking guitarist with a mordant view of the human condition.

But I need some help in identifying two instrumentals that are tacked on to the end of “Don’t Sit On My Jimmy Shand’s.” I think the first instrumental is Shand’s signature tune, “The Bluebell Polka,” (and I've titled it as such….). But the next instrumental tune? I have not a clue. Can anyone confirm that the first song is indeed “The Bluebell Polka,” and provide a title for the unknown second song?

The sound? It’s excellent. There's a bit more "audience ambience" than is typical of most KFOG shows because the venue was outdoors, but it sounds great.
