This one is from WLIR-FM, out on the eastern end of Long Island. For the heck of it, I tossed in some vintage newspaper mentions of the radio station.
So...here's a question for the New Yorkers in the audience:
How far did WLIR reach? Could you hear it in northern New Jersey?

ReplyDeleteTo answer the Q - I lived on the Upper West side in 1984-1986 and I barely Got WLIR on the radio without having to mess with different antenna setups - boombox on the fire escape etc.. LOL.. I eventually moved west to Jersey City NJ and there was no chance of listening anymore. I do recall our chief maintenance tech at our Mid Town studio had a side hustle tweaking and maintaining the local Rock Radio stations. One of which used to advertise "more music" per hour. They achieved that by running the signal through TWO Eventide Harmonizers - pitching the output signal slightly sharp. Hence that .2% shift allowed "more" music in 60 minutes.. HA! - he would get calls at all hours to run to the station because one of the Harmonizers was running slow or fast, and causing a very noticeable phasing effect.... Good times!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Ex_mixer...thanks for response. The Bay Area metro is similarly spread out; you don't listen to San Francisco stations in San Jose. Plus, hills combined with "line of sight" FM propagation means there's lots of "dead areas."
ReplyDeleteI've run into the speeding-up issue with bootlegs. The enterprising bootlegger would compress a slightly longer than 80 minute concert the same way, running it a bit fast.
I grew up in Central Jersey and we couldn't get WLIR at all. For us, it was WMMR and WYSP out of Philly, and WZZO out of Allentown, PA. WNEW FM came in pretty good as well, but WLIR was out on Long Island somewhere and none of those signals made it into NJ.
