This is sourced from a Maxell high bias tape with a custom Starfleet / Blair label stuck on Side A.
There's no label on Side B even though there's music recorded there, too.
The Starfleet side of the / was founded by Sam Kopper in 1978. The Blair side of the / was John Blair & Company, an advertising, communications and printing conglomerate founded in 1935
Kopper got his start in 1968 at Boston's WBCN and had carved out a niche as the guy who did the live broadcasts. He branched out into broadcasts for other radio stations in the northeast, working out of a bus set up as mobile recording/broadcast studio. Starfleet started small with landline hookups but everything changed with the advent of satellite connections.
I've included a four page article from the July 18, 1981 issue of Billboard that goes into great detail about both Starfleet / Blair and the technical details of landline and satellite broadcasts.
In 1982 Starfleet began to work with NBC's The Source radio network and in 1983, bought themselves out of the partnership with John Blair & Company. They were bought out by Westwood One in 1985, and the mobile recording bus had been sold to American radio network Westwood One and became one of several Westwood One Mobile Trucks, named Concertmaster III, with Kopper becoming Westwood One's East Coast Director of Special Projects.
One thing that's interesting about this is the stage introduction was done by WBCN's Carter Allen but broadcast was carried on WZBC and WERS, two college stations in the Boston metro.

WERS (88.9 FM) is one of Emerson College's two radio stations (the other being campus station WECB), located in Boston, Massachusetts, United States."

ReplyDeleteAccording to my notes, I auditioned a boot of this show before and didn't care for the audio quality. Hopefully this is an improvement. Thanks--as always--for the post.
ReplyDeleteHi, Rudolf! They clearly had some audio issues at the venue as the revue call the night a "mish-mash of aural sludge." There are also some mixing issues where there's too much reverb for a bit, and some dropped vocals. The cassette was in fine shape so whatever problems with the hall and the mixing board existed, this is as good as we're going to get.
