Well, this one is heartwarming. VH1 held a contest called the Route '96 Big Backyard Barbecue Summer Sweepstakes, with the prize being backyard party catered by Martha Stewart and entertainment provided by John Mellencamp.
Raymond Holcomb, Jr. won the contest. Raymond had muscular dystrophy and beat out 3,000,000 other entries to win the sweepstakes.
The concert was held in the backyard of family friend Rich Hosmer. The internet reveals the address was 1130 Meadow Ln, Grand Island NY 14072. The street hasn't been googlemapped but I took a screen grab of the house from the spy telescope here at the Voodoo Wagon Orbital Platform & Secret Clubhouse.

This concert is digitized from an Album Network cassette of the broadcast, and is preceded by an "album premiere" for Mellencamp's Mr. Happy Go Lucky album, which was to be released a week later on September 10th.

Inspired by livepetty.com, I tried to create a site where the average joe looking for JM live recordings can find the best (IMO) versions without getting into all the minutiae we do here. Of course, most of my stuff is just draftervoi's stuff but I managed to add a few things. Hopefully, it will prevent a few people from paying to download the same recordings from greedy bootleggers. I remember reading a comment by someone who was tickled pink because he had just bought a copy of Mellencamp's 4 July 1992 concert on "audiophile vinyl".
Thanks Draftervoi for this story. I guess each follower of this blog will give his favourite bbq grill master and entertainer. Me first ! My choice would be Uncle Ted bringing the raw meat and the sisters Wilson from Heart enjoying the neighbourhood with their music. Not sure that uncle Ted and the Wilson sisters would enjoy being together at the same bbq but you can always dream.

ReplyDeleteHI, Rudolf...yeah, it can be Tonawanda...and at the next level up, "Buffalo." Once I found the specific address and looked the distance...it's seven miles drive from the house to downtown Tonawanda, AND across the Niagra River...I had to make a choice.
